CD Operations Part of Division Office Gerry Bellendir, Assoc. Head for Operations David Ritchie, Assistant Head for Operations Amy Pavnica, Senior Safety Officer Jack MacNerland, Building Services Manager Phil Lutz, Data Center Manager Keith Coiley, Building & Office Support (Keith Chadwick)

CD Operations What we do  Manage & improve facilities and programs to help promote the mission of CD  Environment, Safety & Health  FCC & WH office areas  FCC building & utilities  Computer rooms  Value-Driven Operations

CD Operations Environment, Safety & Health Environment, Safety & Health  Provide guidance as to safety rules & regulations  Provide safety training  Develop emergency procedures, train wardens & conduct drills  Routine safety walkthroughs of all areas  Assist in preparing is hazard analyses  Develop safe work rules  Record, track & report safety findings  Ergonomic assessments & provide recommendations  Participate on Lab safety committees  Try to provide a safe place for you to work

CD Operations FCC & WH Office Areas  Construct & reconfigure office spaces  Provide and install office equipment  Personnel moves as needed  Junk pickups  Liaison with Lab cleaning services  Try to provide a comfortable place for you to work

CD Operations FCC Building & Utilities  Maintenance and improvements  Electrical, heating, cooling, water, …  Building automation for monitoring & control  Fire protection  Security

CD Operations Computer rooms  Provide space, power & cooling for central computers (~ 2600 computers in FCC)  Problem: increasing luminosity  How to we handle additional computers required by experiments and other users? (~1,000 systems/year)  FCC has run out of power & cooling  Cannot add to FCC due to lack of utility space and many lengthy service interruptions  Had to seek areas outside FCC

CD Operations New Computer rooms  New Muon Lab  In use for the last few years for Lattice Gauge computers used by theorists (256 systems)  Already used for CDF early buys (160 systems)  Next week moving 160 CDF systems from FCC  Developing plan for another room, but it will not be enough for FY05 and beyond

CD Operations New Computer rooms  Wide Band  Long term phased plan FY04 – 08  FY04/05 build: 2,880 computers (~$3M)  Tape robot room in FY05  Trying to accelerate to get 1 year ahead (breathing room)  FY06/07: ~3,000 computers  Longer term: possible use of high bay building (3 floors)

CD Operations Value-Driven Operations  How well is CD performing it’s mission?  Measurements can help answer the questions  How much are we doing?  How well are we doing it?  Where to focus our attention for improvement?  Compare to our service agreements (MOU’s, etc.) to see if we are meeting our objectives  Are we doing the right things?  Are we doing enough?  Departments already providing some measurements  How do we use these?  Are other measurements needed?  What are they?
