Article Kato, Tsukasa (2014). A reconsideration of sex differences in response to sexual and emotional infidelity. Archives of Sexual Behavior, 24, Evolved Jealousy Mechanism (EJM): males are more jealous of sexual infidelity due to their paternal insecurities and females are more jealous of emotional infidelity due to their parental investment.

Randomly selected male and female students in committed relationships with the opposite sex. 64 females and 64 males Viewed two conditions, vivid and non-vivid infidelity

Hypothesis Men are more likely to imagine vivid sexual infidelity, causing them to be more upset by said infidelity. Hypothesis: differences between the sexes in response to infidelity stems not from the infidelity itself, but from the sex differences in tendency to imagine vivid sexual details.

Results Females were more upset in the vivid condition of the infidelity scenarios the vividness of the scenario helped them imagine the infidelity. Males showed no significant difference between the vivid and non-vivid scenarios, they are equally capable of imagining graphic sexual details in both settings. This supports the researcher’s hypothesis that males are more capable of imagining graphic sexual details in comparison to females, which could explain their tendency to be more upset over sexual infidelity than females.
