William Shakespeare ( ) Famous English playwright 38 plays Over 150 sonnets (type of poem )

Key Terms  Quatrain  Couplet  Rhyme Scheme  Sonnet  Iambic Pentameter

Quatrain  A quatrain is a four-line stanza, as in the following example: This is my letter to the World That never wrote to Me- The simple News that Nature told- With tender Majesty - Emily Dickinson, from “This letter to the World” A poem can have more than one quatrain.

Couplet  Two line stanza Roses are red, Violets are blue. A poem can have more than one couplet

Rhyme Scheme  The pattern of end rhyme in a poem. The pattern is charted by assigning a letter of the alphabet to the last word of each line. Lines that rhyme are give the same letter. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,A And sorry I could not travel bothB And be one traveler, long, I stoodA And looked down one as far as I couldA To where it bent in the undergrowthB Rhyme scheme = ABAAB

Iambic Pentameter  A way to measure each line of a poem  Each line must have 10 syllables Let two more summers wither in their pride, Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride

Sonnet  14 line poem Three quatrains (4 lines) and one couplet (2 lines)  written in iambic pentameter  Rhymes ABAB CDCD EFEF GG  Usually, expresses one thought or event

 Learning to Write a Sonnet  The sonnet form is old and full of dust And yet I want to learn to write one well. To learn new forms and grow is quite a must, But I will learn it quickly, I can tell.  And so I sit, today, with pen in hand, Composing three new quatrains with a rhyme. The rhythm flows like wind at my command. The A-B-A-B form consumes my time.  But I’m not done until there’s fourteen lines. One ending couplet, after three quatrains. I’ve tried to write this new form several times. The effort’s huge; I have to rack my brain.  But I persist, my fourteen lines now done. I wrote my poem; my sonnet work is won.  by Denise Rodgers
