Original Shakespearean text Modern day translation ROMEO Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs; Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers‘ eyes Being vex'd a sea nourish'd with lovers' tears What is it else? a madness most discreet, A choking gall and a preserving sweet. ROMEO Here’s what love is: a smoke made out of lovers' sighs. When the smoke clears, love is a fire burning in your lover’s eyes. If you frustrate love, you get an ocean made out of lovers' tears. What else is love? It’s a wise form of madness. It’s a sweet lozenge that you choke on. What is love?

 We will discuss the following images of Romeo’s and discuss what he was trying to say about love.  What picture does the imagery create in your mind.

 Write down the quotations with translations, and write an explanation of what the imagery shows.  You could draw a picture of the picture it creates in your mind.

 ‘It is the east and Juliet is the sun.’ Romeo, Act II scene ii.  ‘I have night’s cloak to hide me from their sight.’ Romeo Act II scene ii.  ‘Thou know’st the mask of night is on my face’ Juliet, Act II scene ii.  ‘This bud of love, by summer’s ripening breath, May prove a beauteous flower….’ Juliet, Act II scene ii

 ‘It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night.’ Romeo, Act I scene V  ‘My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand.’ Romeo, Act I scene V (Blushing = shy, pilgrims= religious people)  ‘My grave is like to be my wedding bed’ Juliet, Act I scene V

 Summative Assignment  Revisit act 2 scene 2 and choose an example of imagery.  Write down the example and write out an explanation of it’s meaning.  Plan a picture to show the imagery.  You will hand draw a picture representing the imagery and put the quote on the paper.  You will be marked on the following criteria…

 Does the image match the quote? Can the viewer understand the meaning by the picture?  Is it aesthetically pleasing? *Is it neat? *Is it colourful? *Is it symmetrical? *Does it cite the act, scene and line, and have quotation marks? Look at the following example.. “Romeo! Humours! Madman! Passion! Lover! Appear thou in the likeness of a sigh”(II.i.7-8).
