AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO SUSATINING RESOURCES AND REDUCING COSTS IN TODAYS ECONOMY

PIOx ® Photon Initiated Oxidation

PIOx ® Purpose: To remove COD from water

PIOx ® The PIOx ® unit contains an internal orifice that directs a 1" by 1/2" stream of water (to be cleaned) tangently into a cylindrical chamber at a rate of 50 gallons per minute.

The stream of water flows around the inner circumference in a ribbon like pattern. The wall of this chamber is a cylinder made of sintered stainless steel.

Sintered stainless steel is made by compressing small stainless steel particles until they become fused together to form a porous sheet of stainless steel.

These pores are 2 microns in size. The porous sheet is then formed into a cylinder like chamber.

Air is applied to the outer side of the porous tube at 1½ to 2 psi. The air is forced through the pores and creates a 2 micron foam within the water to be cleaned.

In the center of the porous tube is a special light. 185nm light produces Ozone. The 254nm light has a sterilizing effect. Both of these wavelengths are within the UV range. This high intensity light produces ultraviolet light of two primary wave lengths:

The PIOx ® units job is to spread approximately 2/5 of a gallon of solution over 74,000 square feet of surface area at a rate of 50 gallons per minute while continuously applying the light source at a distance of less than ½ inch.

The light source producing ozone is approximately ½” from the 2 micron foam which contains organic COD. The ozone is generated within the foam bubble and reacts with the COD destroying it, leaving carbon dioxide.

This unit allows the introduction of air, contaminated water, and the ozone producing light source, within the reaction chamber for the destruction of COD.

HTST Caustic Reclaim How would you like to reuse the caustic water used to clean the HTST yesterday? This is not science fiction this system is in operation today! ® Caustic wash water at the end of the HTST is pumped to a holding tank. Normally this wash water would be pumped to the drain. This tank is in constant circulation through the PIOx ® system removing solids leaving clean caustic wash water ready for reuse.

Application ® ® The PIOx ® is applied by pulling the water to be cleaned from the source at a rate of 50 gpm traveling through the PIOx ® and back to the source. It does not interfere with normal operations nor destroy the alkalinity agents in your cleaning chemicals.

Bakery/Ice Cream Corona Ozone Unit Ozone can be added to supplement the effects of the PIOx ®. This unit produces 20 lbs of ozone per day.

Bakery/Ice Cream Lift Station The PIOx ® can be “boosted” using an ozone generator. The generator adds ozone and increases the effectiveness of the reaction. This effect is limited and the cost must be weighed vs. an additional PIOx ® unit.

Future PIOx ® Projects Currently 3 filling lines run 18 hours a day 5 days a week. Potable drinking (city) water is used to rinse milk jug before casing. After rinsing milk jug water is sent to the drain. Milk jug rinse water reclaim.

This rinsing uses 250 gal./hour, 4500 gal./day, or 22,500 gallons per 5 day week. Approximately 260 days per year equals gal/per year that could be saved. How much water is 1 million gallons? 1 million gallons will fill a swimming pool 267 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 10 feet deep, or water for 11,700 people’s average water use for a day.
