Fluency Notes

What is fluency? Fluency- the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.

How we practice By partner reading By reading aloud in class By reading a specific passage for one minute with an assigned partner

What fluency practice looks like Sit next to your partner- “Look, Lean, Whisper” Recorder is always right. Be sensitive to your partner- everyone is here to learn Partner A Parnter B

Fluency goals high school: w.p.m 98% accuracy – 2 errors or less per 100 words

Discontinue Rule If the student doesn’t read any words correctly in the 1 st row, stop and the score is 0.

Hesitate/Struggle 3 seconds- mark the word incorrect and tell your partner the word

Hyphenated Words Count all words that can stand alone separately – Ex. Mother-in-law ( 3 words) Count all words that cannot stand alone as one word – ex. Yo-yo (1 word)

Numerals Read as one word – Ex. 109 = one hundred nine

Mispronounced Word Counts as an error They read: The sky was dark and cloudy. The text says: The sky was dark and mp stormy.

Self-Corrections If within 3-4 seconds, no error They read: The sky was dark and cloudy. I mean, the sky was dark and stormy. The text says: The sky was dark and sc stormy.

Repeated Words Doesn’t affect score Mark by underlining. They read: The sky was dark and, the sky was dark and stormy. The text says: The sky was dark and stormy.

Inserted Words Counts as 1 error per word. They read: The blue sky was dark and very stormy. blue The text says: The ^sky was dark and very ^ stormy. (2 errors)

Omitted Words Count as 1 error per word They read: The sky was dark. The text says: The sky was dark and stormy. (2 errors)

Word Order Count as 1 error for every word out of order They read: The sky was stormy and dark. The text says: The sky was dark and stormy. (2 errors)

If you finish the passage and there is still time left, begin reading the passage again.

Miscues MP = Mispronounced word SC = Self-correction ___ = Repeated word ^ = Inserted word Circle = omitted word Arrow = word order

Final Thoughts Fluency is not a competition. It is for you to personally improve your reading skills. Do not try to rush through the passages; remember that your goal is 98% accuracy.
