How to use & configure your HT (Yaesu FT-60) Bob Dickerman WA1QKT
Goals Describe FT-60 Change important settings on FT-60 Manually program for and use: Simplex frequency Local repeater Use memory modes Recall Store Write memory to VFO
FT-60R Ham VHF/UHF Television VHF/UHF VHF aircraft band – AM! Weather Many other commercial & public safety 5W power, adjustable
Survey Who here tonight owns an FT-60? How many have FT-60s that were cloned or programmed with M.A.R.C frequencies? How many have manually programmed their FT-60 to work with a repeater? Anything in particular that you want learn about?
Basic Controls (p. 3-5) VOL/PWR, PTT, SQL multi-purpose DIAL (& arrow keys ) MONI switch LAMP switch
Battery (pp. 8-10) Charge in 10 hours Don’t charge more than 24 hours For longest battery life, wait for Battery Indicator (lower right) before charging Spare
Basic Tips Keep manual with radio! Battery voltage displayed when turn on If “lost in menu tree”, turn power off and on Always LOCK keypad If keypad is NOT LOCKed, do not touch keys unintentionally
Don’t need these features for basic operation! ARTS Automatic Range Transponder System Vertex Wires Sister Radio Group EPCS Enhanced Paging & Code Squelch Emergency Channel (beep, home channel) EIA Emergency Automatic ID Memory Banks (vs. standard memory channels) – but might be useful to organize large number of channels into groups, if traveling, for instance (like MS “folders” for files) Password
Password Not recommended Password Can prevent casual unauthorized use, but Manual tells how to defeat May lead to “password mishap”, which requires complete erase of all memory to defeat
What makes this challenging? Most keypad buttons have 3 functions (pp. 6,7 ) Primary (Black lettering on button, press key) Secondary (Orange lettering above button, after first press F/W key and then press key) Third (White lettering below button, press & hold key > 1 second) No index in manual (get .pdf and “find”) SET menu accesses 56 parameters (pp. 66-78)
LOCK (p. 16) Default combination locks keypad & DIAL To lock, Press & hold LOCK > 1 second Or, Press F/W, then press LOCK To unlock, Repeat Look for “padlock” icon, lower left
Weather channels memory bank (p. 34) Press & hold key 1 Turn DIAL or to select 1 of 10 frequencies Weather channel 4, 162.425 MHz good in Northfield To exit, press & hold key 1 again
Set Transmit Power TX PO (p.15) Unlocked? Reduce power output to 0.5 W Press F/W , TX PO , use DIAL or to select “LOW”, press F/W to exit Temporary in memory mode (power cycle resets TX PO)
Inadvertent Internet Connection active (p. 49) DTMF Touch Tone heard at TX radio, see Internet (“atomic”) icon upper right First 2 seconds of transmission not heard at RX radio Caused by inadvertent 0 key press To fix, just press 0 key again and LOCK!
Two Tuning Modes: VFO and Memory VFO – Variable Frequency Oscillator changes frequency Memory changes memory channel Frequency Also tone, shift/offset, splits, power To change, press V/M
Tuning in VFO and Memory modes VFO – changes frequency Turn DIAL knob Up/Down Keys Type numbers (6 digits, decimal point assumed) Scan Memory – changes memory channel Type numbers (1 to 3 digits , F/W)
Two basic communication modes Simplex Repeater
Simplex TX & RX are on same frequency, like CB or FRS radios
Repeater Operation
Tuning in a repeater in Memory mode Unlock (if locked) Press & hold LOCK Go to Memory mode (if in VFO mode) Press V/M, to see small 1-3 digit # upper left Select Memory Turn DIAL knob Up/Down Keys Type numbers (1 to 3 digits , F/W) At channel 33, should see “LEYDEN”
Call on the Leyden Repeater!
Using Simplex in VFO Mode unLOCK, if necessary If locked, press LOCK for > 1 second, or F/W , LOCK Change to VFO mode, if necessary If in memory mode (small #s upper left), Press V/M Set frequency to 440.000 MHz Press numbers (turn DIAL, or press to adjust frequency) Make sure no shift when TX (press PTT, make sure frequency doesn’t change when PTT) If shift is on, press F/W, press RPT, turn DIAL to see “RPT.OFF”, press F/W again to exit
Call on 440.000 MHz simplex!
Repeater Operation Set “repeater output frequency” Set “offset, +/-” (also called “shift, +/-”) Set “tone”
FCARC Repeaters Output frequency, offset, tone 146.985 MHz, negative offset 0.6 MHz, PL 136.5 Hz 448.875 MHz, negative offset 5.0 MHz, PL 136.5 Hz
FCARC 440 repeater in VFO Mode unLOCK, if necessary If locked, press LOCK for > 1 second, or F/W , LOCK Change to VFO mode, if necessary If in memory mode (small #s upper left), Press V/M Set repeater output frequency to 448.875 MHz Press numbers to select frequency (turn DIAL, or press to adjust f) Check offset, and select neg. offset, if necessary Press F/W , RPT , turn DIAL to see “RPT. - ”, press F/W to exit Test offset by PTT, say callsign, look for 443.875 while PTT Set SQuelch TYPe Press F/W , SQ TYP , turn DIAL to see “TONE”, press F/W to exit Set PL tone squelch frequency Press F/W , CODE , turn DIAL to see “136.5HZ”, press F/W to exit
Call on 448.875 MHz FCARC Repeater!
Simple Scans To scan Memories, Go to Memory mode Press & hold or to start scan up or down Repeat to stop memory scan (book says press V/M or PTT) To scan all tunable frequencies with VFO, Go to VFO mode Select starting frequency
Change Memory Labels to display Frequency Go to Memory mode Select Memory channel # to change Press F/W to enter Function mode Press SET to set parameters Rotate DIAL to see “27 NAME” Press F/W to select NAME settings Rotate DIAL to select “FREQ” (vs. “ALPHA”) Press PTT to save new setting
Reverse (p. 21) Reverses repeater input & output frequencies Use to check whether someone who is transmitting is close enough to be heard on simplex Foxhunts To use, just unlock and press HM/RV When “reversed”, shift “+” or “–” blinks!
Memory Storage (p. 28) CAUTION(changes memory)! Go to VFO mode Set frequency, RPT, SQ TYP, CODE, TX PO as needed in VFO mode To store in memory, Press & hold F/W; next open channel is selected Turn DIAL if want to write to a different channel number Press F/W again to write Will return to VFO mode after write
Memory Channel Delete (p. 32) CAUTION (changes memory)! Go to Memory mode Press & hold F/W Display should show next empty channel Rotate DIAL to select channel to be deleted Press F/W to delete
Write Memory Channel Data to VFO (p. 32) CAUTION(changes VFO)! Go to Memory mode Press BAND Display should show memory “tun” Press & hold BAND Display should show memory “VFO-IN”
