UTILITIES MANAGEMENT

UTILITIES SYSTEMS FALL WITHIN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM STEAM SYSTEM HVAC SYSTEM VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL TRANSPORT SYSTEM COMMUNICATION SYSTEM (Nurse Call, Intercoms, Beeper, Overhead Paging, & Telephones). PLUMBING SYSTEM MEDICAL GAS SYSTEM MEDICAL VACUUM SYSTEM

EMERGENCY RESPONSE FOR ONE OR MORE UTILITES SYSTEMS CALL 8300 at Cape Fear and EXT at New Hanover & Off Site Areas OR HOSPITAL PAGER ext Beeper Number 777

Responsible for the delivering materials and personnel throughout the Medical Center. Includes elevators, dumbwaiters, and the pneumatic tube system. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM NORMAL DISTRIUTION IS CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO CP&L EMERGENCY DISTRIBUTION is also connected directly to CP&L, but in the event of a power loss, is fed within 10 seconds by the emergency generator. Electrical light switches and receptacles connected to the generator are colored RED Critical equipment needs to be plugged into Red Outlets

COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS WITHIN THE HOSPITAL TELEPHONE SYSTEM PAGER SYSTEM OVERHEAD PAGING SYSTEM NURSE CALL SYSTEM

Do the following: –Turn off power immediately –Remove the person using a non- conductive aid (i.e. piece of wood or plastic) –If not breathing or the heart has stopped begin CPR.

Electrical Safety Grounding: The 3-prong plug is required at NHHN unless the piece of equipment is double insulated. –Grounding Creates: A low resistant path for the current Protection against shock A connection to the earth

Code White Description: –Limited or total loss of telephones, pagers and/or overhead paging system. Other equipment to use in this emergency –Two way radios –Pay telephones –Cellular telephones (keep at least 10 ft. away from medical equipment).

MEDICAL GASES Medical Gases include: Oxygen Medical Air Nitrogen Nitrous Oxide Carbon Dioxide

Cylinder Safety Do not carry cylinders by “neck” Secure large cylinders to wall or in cart Segregate full and empty cylinders Use appropriate cylinder holders Use Chain to secure tanks

Oxygen Safety Know that the “charge nurse” or supervisor has the authority to shut off oxygen in an emergency. Don’t place oxygen cylinders below beds. They can break the bed or potentially become missiles. Don’t place cylinders at the patient’s legs in a stretcher or bed. They could fall off!!

Do not place bottles here
