National Anthem Star Spangled Banner Our National Anthem was written during the war of 1812 by attorney Francis Scott Key. He wrote it in reaction to being attacked by the British. Many of the lyrics in the song are events that he witnessed that night. He wrote the anthem as a poem and it was later set to music as our National Anthem.
