From Colony to State The colonization of South Carolina and the American Revolution

The Thirteen Colonies England had 13 colonies –Massachusetts was the first –Georgia was the last Before 1729 South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia were all one colony called Carolina.

The Thirteen Colonies The colonies were divided into three sections. –New England Colonies –Middle Colonies –Southern Colonies South Carolina was part of the Southern Colonies.

The Thirteen Colonies Virginia New Jersey Massachusetts New Hampshire Pennsylvania New York Maryland Connecticut Rhode Island Delaware North Carolina South Carolina Georgia

Separate Colonies A natural border divided the northern and southern parts of Carolina. –In 1729, North and South Carolina became 2 separate colonies. The king was worried that the Spanish in Florida might attack South Carolina. –In 1732, the southern part of South Carolina became Georgia.

Becoming a Royal Colony South Carolinians became unhappy with Lord’s Proprietors. –They were not keeping the colonists safe. –Colonists feared Native American attacks. –Colonists feared attacks from the French and the Spanish. Colonists wanted to become a royal colony. –A colony ruled by a king Francis Nicholson became the first royal governor of SC making SC a royal colony. –Royal governor is chosen by the king.

Colonial Government King of England –Royal Governor Royal Council –Commons House of Assembly

King of England Royal Governor Appointed by the King. Oversaw colonial trade. Had final approval on laws. Commons House of Assembly Made local government decisions and passed laws that needed to be approved by the Governor and the King. Royal Council Advised Royal Governor. King Charles of England

Early South Carolina Government Regulators-settlers who wanted to control by rule the upcountry. They worked because the government in Charles Town couldn’t enforce laws or protect people in the upcountry. They started misusing their power so the government got involved and they lost their power.

SC was ruled by a royal governor who had help from a royal council who were all chosen by the king of England. Local decisions were made by the Commons House of Assembly. The royal governor and the king could veto (reject) any laws the assembly came up with. Early South Carolina Government

Rice and Growth Economy- the way products are made and are bought and sold in a country or area. Export- a good that is produced in one country and shipped to another to be sold. –Rice became an important export for the SC colony. Immigrant- a person who comes to live in a new country. –Many came to settle in parts of the upcountry. –Largest upcountry settlement was Camden. –As more people came to upcountry, trade became more important.

Conflict with England French and Indian War –Fought between the French/Indians and the colonists. British troops were sent to help the colonists This cost England a lot of money so the king forced the colonies to pay taxes –Tax- money that a government collects from its citizens to pay for expenses. –He would not allow any colonists to come to England to protest the taxes or have representatives to do it for them.

Conflict with England The Stamp Act –Passed by England in 1765 –Colonists had to buy stamps to put on newspapers, books, and documents –They were mad about this because colonists did not have any say in England –TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION –Riots started in Charles Town so the British shut down the port and the courts. –The Stamp Act ended

Conflict with England The Townshend Acts –Passed by England in 1767 –Taxed imports such as paper, tea, glass, lead, and paints –In 1770 the Townshend Acts were repealed except the tax on tea.

Conflict with England Tax on Tea –Colonists began to boycott tea Boycott-a protest in which people refuse to use certain goods. –Boston Tea Party-1773 Colonists dumped all the tea on a ship into Boston harbor England closed Boston’s ports because of this A similar event happened in Charles Town –Colonists dumped 3 shiploads of tea into Charles Town harbor

Annotate the Picture I noticed.. I’m wondering… I’m confused by… I enjoyed..

Conflict with England Intolerable Acts –Passed as punishment for the Boston Tea Party –Citizens were not allowed to have town meetings –Citizens were forced to allow British troops into their homes
