CLG and Migration: Why do we care?  Cohesion (PSA21): Maximising the economic contribution of migrants whilst at the same time also managing the social impacts of migration in local areas and communities.  Local Government Funding: Improving our understanding of how migrants contribute to the delivery of public services on the one hand, but also of how migration impacts on the demand for services such as translation, health, education, and care services, etc.  Housing Affordability: Improving our understanding of how migration affects household growth and housing affordability both at the national and sub-national level.

What measures do we have in place to deal with these challenges?  We launched the Migration Impacts Fund [£35 million for FY 09/10 and similar amount in 10/11] to help local areas manage the transitional impacts of migration on their communities.  We have also delivered, together with the Home Office the Migration Impacts Forum - a group for bringing together front-line practitioners with Ministers to provide evidence on the impact of migration on public services and communities and examples of how they are being managed at the local level.  We will continue to work across Government to put in place measures aimed at building strong and cohesive communities - including working with DIUS to re-focus the provision of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) so that it reaches out to the more excluded groups.

What measures do we have in place to deal with these challenges?  We also provide support for the Cross-government programme - led by National Statistician - to improve population and migration statistics, especially at the local level.[1][1]  The improvements to local population estimates and projections will be available in 2010 in time to inform key funding decisions, including the next three-year Local Government Finance Settlement and the next Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR). [1][1] A Pprogramme Board of senior officials across government, including CLG, steers the work programme. LGA represents local government. The Ministerial group is co-chaired by CLG (John Healey) and Home Office (Phil Woolas) and Ministers oversee the programme.

What measures do we have in place to deal with these challenges?  We have a well-defined programme of research and analysis on: The drivers of migration trends and patterns at the national and sub-national level; The contribution of migration to economic local areas and communities; and The socio-economic drivers of migrant integration.
