Presented by: Kira N. Deane Statistician I (Ag.) Barbados Statistical Service (UNITED NATIONS WORKSHOP ON INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL CLASSIFICATIONS-BOGOTA, COLOMBIA, AUGUST 4 – 7, 2014

Background- BARSIC Barbados Standard Industrial Classification (BARSIC)- Sugar and Tourism were formed because they were the major industries contributing to the Barbadian economy. Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Centre (CARTAC) advised that these changes were incorrect. It was the consensus to revert to ISIC coding instead of developing a new BARSIC correlating to ISIC Rev 4. Coding according to ISIC Rev 4 is currently in progress for all types of business activities

Current Uses of ISIC ISIC Rev. 4 was used to code businesses for the 2010 Population and Housing Census Used to classify industries in the Producer Price Index Business Register is being updated from ISIC Rev. 3 to ISIC Rev. 4 The Continuous Labour Force Sample Survey industry tables were revised to ISIC Rev. 4 in the year 2010

Future Uses of ISIC Rev. 4 The BSS will be moving to SNA 2008 therefore the SUT 2010 and all other National Accounts related outputs will be recoded from BARSIC/ISIC Rev. 3,or classified, to ISIC Rev. 4. A revised Index of Industrial Production will also be produced using ISIC Rev. 4 Creation of a Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) Creation of a Cultural Industries Satellite Account

Issues Not being able to group items related to Renewable Energy Industrial activity related to indigenous products are all usually grouped together in ‘Other’ at the 4 digit level and therefore are not easily disaggregated. Solution: Using as much detail where possible 8620 Specifying medical practices and dental practices to be able to provide for customers who have detailed requests for information regarding one and not the other

Example- Arts, entertainment and recreation ALL cultural activities are grouped together using 9000 therefore the contribution of the different areas cannot be disaggregated. Section R- Arts, entertainment and recreation 9000 Creative, arts and entertainment activities This class includes: -production of live theatrical presentations, concerts and opera or dance productions and other stage productions Activities of groups, circuses or companies, orchestras or bands Activities of individual artists such as authors, actors, directors, musicians, lecturers or speakers, stage-set designers and builders etc.

The End Thank you!
