A Joint Project Between OSDH and DEQ Using GIS Elizabeth Kruger, OSDH Hub Baggett, DEQ OK-PHETS May 2005

Acknowledgements Kay Pearson, OK-PHETS Principal Investigator Oklahoma State Department Of Health Cheryl Barr, Oklahoma Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Oklahoma State Department Of Health Monty Elder, OK-PHETS, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality May 2005

Outline  An overview of OK-PHETS  Projects  With ArcGIS and new directions  Display Maps  Problems with geocoding  Expectations May 2005

What is OK-PHETS?  OK-PHETS stands for Oklahoma Public Health Environmental Tracking System  It is a joint project between the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) & the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) May 2005

An Overview of OK-PHETS  Through funding from CDC, Oklahoma began OK-PHETS program in the fall of 2003  OK-PHETS Overall Goal: To bridge the gap between health problems and environmental hazards by linking data and assessing the impact of environmental hazards on health outcomes in Oklahoma May 2005

Components of OK-PHETS  Data Types OSDH: Health Outcomes DEQ: Environmental Hazards  Data linkage  Privacy protection HIPPA Pending Secure Website  Collaboration and partnerships All stakeholders May 2005

Data Sources  OSDH: health outcomes  Lead surveillance data  Birth defects surveillance data  Cancer surveillance data  Asthma surveillance data  DEQ: environmental exposures  Water quality  Air quality – ambient air monitoring  Land Protection  Customer Services May 2005

Projects  Oral/Facial Clefts  Adult Blood Lead Poisoning  Childhood Blood Lead Poisoning  Congenital Heart Defects  Adult and Childhood Leukemia  Bladder Cancer  Mesothelioma  Asthma May 2005

Using GIS ArcView 9.0 (ESRI Product) ArcGIS Desktop Application ArcMap ArcCatalog ArcToolbox Map Analysis Cartography Export Import Geodatabase Metadata Data Management Geocoding Example of ArcMap May 2005

With ArcGIS  Spatial Analysis  ArcView Map  Maps based on rates  Geocode physical addresses  SaTScan Software May 2005

New Directions  Purchase Add On Extensions to the ArcGIS  Geostatistical Analyst  Spatial Analyst  3-D Analyst  Terra Seer Spatial Statistics  Boundary Seer  Cluster Seer  SpaceStat May 2005

Problems With Geocoding Problems with the Attribute Database:  PO Box is given rather than a street address  Rural route address or other types of postal delivery routes  The address is missing one or more components  House number is missing  Street type or direction is missing or incorrect  Spelling errors in the attribute field May 2005

Expectations  Get updated statewide street files  Get complete geocoded physical addresses  Convert rural routes to physical address  Interdepartment or interdivision cooperation and collaboration (ex. OK-PHETS)  Need of geocoding and metadata standards using FGDC standard  Create tools to support various types of analyses and tools to search for and find data May 2005

Thank You Q & A May 2005
