Peer Mediation at J. F. Tatem Elementary School Jason Rosenberg Health and Physical Educator Peer Mediation Coordinator

What is peer mediation?  Peer mediation is a service that the children can use to resolve conflicts that they are having with other students themselves.  It gives the children an opportunity to be more independent and solve conflicts in a mature responsible manner.

When and where is peer mediation?  Peer mediation occurs during lunch periods on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s.  It will be held in Mrs. Batoff’s room.

Who is able to attend a peer mediation session?  Any student in grades 2-5 that completes a peer mediation request sheet.

Who will hear about my session after I attend?  NOBODY!  Peer mediation is confidential. The mediators will not discuss your session outside of the mediation room

How does peer mediation work? What are the steps involved in mediation?  Getting each side of the story  Eliciting feelings from both sides  Brainstorming solutions  Compromising to make an agreement  Signing an agreement

What happens after a student attends a mediation session?  At the conclusion of peer mediation, an agreement will be completed and signed by everyone in the room. The mediators will then follow up on the mediation session within the week.

Who is eligible to be a peer mediator?  Beginning January, 4th graders who express interest.  The following year they will become the 5th grade mediators.

How is peer mediation promoted?  The peer mediators will also demonstrate a session in front of each class in grades 2-5.  Every teacher will have mediation request sheets.  Mr. Rosenberg’s e-board Mr. Rosenberg’s e-board Mr. Rosenberg’s e-board  Posters will be displayed around the school See slides below for examples See slides below for examples
