Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence

For 1 st – 4 th grade students with disabilities 30 mins. of instruction daily, 4 days/week One-on-one instruction Using progress monitoring

 76 students  10 4 th graders  24 3 rd graders  27 2 nd graders  15 1 st graders  28 of 76 on IEPs  48 “At Risk” at the start of the year  50 tutors

E FFECTIVE AFFORDABLE REPLICABLE SUSTAINING

 Schools and communities become partners  Uses middle/high school students  Gives community service hours  Uses college students  Fulfilling course requirements  Even the D.A.R.E. officer tutors

 Significant progress in reading fluency  Substantial gains in less than 6 months  Reduces achievement gap between students with and without disabilities  Provides data for intervention teams for IAT, MFE, IEP processes

 60% of 4 th graders passed Ohio Achievement Assessment  Avg 1 st grader reading level went up 5 levels  Avg 2 nd grader reading level went up 6 levels  Avg 3 rd grader reading level went up 4 levels  Avg 4 th grader reading level went up 4 levels

 Of 24 3 rd graders, 10 passed their O.A.A.  Average student increased cold/warm/hot reads by 26 words/min.

 $1.00 per hour of mentoring  Low license cost of $59.95 per year for 16 students  Uses volunteers

 Works in individual classrooms or building-wide  Uses materials already in schools  Uses school aides or student tutors

 Bridges the gap from June to August  Offers summer tutoring  BGSU testing center gathers and assesses data  Parents tutor their own kids Mother tutoring daughter

 60% of 4 th graders passed their O.A.A.  42% of 3 rd graders passed their O.A.A.  5 2 nd graders passed their O.A.A.

 57/58 students increased their words per/min. by mid-year  12 students increased 3-9 wpm  21 increased wpm  18 increased wpm  6 increased wpm

 Avg. 4 th grader increased 30 wpm  Avg. 3 rd grader increased 26 wpm  Avg. 2 nd grader increased 21 wpm

 Reinforces connection between school and home  Parents of “At Risk” students given summer tutoring packets  Currently 5 families tutoring at home
