What is POV? Why is point of view important in history? Helps us empathize and understand: puts us in the place of someone who was there Primary source documents are NOT FACTS. They are opinions and reflections of the way a person saw the world. Helps us understand differing opinions on certain events.

Point of view: we all have one….. How might these different people have different points of view be on the HOMECOMING DANCE? A 9 th grader A 10 th grader A 12 th grader Ms. Greenberg (chaperone)

Authorial Point of View - definition Authorial POV: Students show how the occupation, gender, class, religion, nationality, political position, ethnicity, etc. influence the author’s POV You can have clues to POV even if you are not totally familiar with the topic they are discussing.

Example: Ms. Greenberg is a 35 year old high school teacher. She loves teaching history, and she cares about her students. She does not like staying up late and often falls asleep on the couch before 9pm watching history documentaries. She doesn’t like being away from her 2 year old at night. She is not up to date on current music, and the most recent song she can recite the words to is “Mo’ Money Mo’Problems” by Notorious B.I.G and Puff Daddy from 1997 (Ms. Greenberg is not “with it” and doesn’t realize Puff Daddy is now called P-ditty)

Ms Greenberg’s “review” of the Homecoming Dance “The Homecoming Dance was crowded and loud. It started at 8pm, why couldn’t it start at a more reasonable time, like 4pm? My son is already asleep and I didn’t get to say goodnight! The music was too loud, it sounded like a cat in a washing machine. That is… until ‘90s flashback time: finally – some excellent music! I felt like dancing! As I walked through the dance floor I saw how much fun my students were having and it made me so happy. They were talking with friends, dancing and having a great time. When the dance was over finally I looked at my watch -11pm! I was tired but happy and excited. It ended up being a great experience. Write one sentence connecting Ms. Greenberg’s “authorial point of view” to the document.

Where would YOUR “authorial point of view” come from? 1.Your age 2.Where you live 3.Your family background 4.Your hobbies and interests (3) 5.Your passions – what you really care about (2)

What is your point of view on the following? Relate your point of view back to who you are. (Choose two to write about) WHY WOULD YOU FEEL THIS WAY GIVEN WHO YOU ARE. Make the connection between your AUTHORIAL POV and the item in question 1.Global Warming 2.Organic salad bar at RHS 3.The homecoming dance 4.Bicycle races

In groups 1. Read the historical background about the 1524 peasant war in the HRE 2. Read each document and DISCUSS why the person would have said this given who they are. Consider their occupation, role in society, and the purpose of the document. Write notes on your document sheet. 3. On assignment #3 write 2-3 POV statements based on documents of your choice.
