College and Career Readiness

What is College Readiness? What is Career Readiness? What does this mean for you? Why do you (as an 8 th grader) need to know this?

What is College Readiness? College Readiness is being prepared for any postsecondary education or training experience. Being ready for college means that a high school graduate has the English and Math knowledge and skills necessary to qualify and succeed in entry level, credit bearing college courses without the need for remedial course work.

What does it mean for you to be College Ready? Students must pass the ACT test. Putting the focus on the Reading, Math and English tests. These are the tests that determine College Readiness. Scores needed on ACT are Reading – 20 Math – 19 English - 18 If you do not meet these benchmarks than you may take one of the following placement tests to meet the benchmarks: COMPASS scores that are needed for the ACT are: Reading – 85 Math – 36 English/Writing Skills – 74 KYOTE scores that are needed for the ACT are: Reading – 20 College Readiness Math - 22

What is Career Readiness? Career Readiness is not just a job. It means a high school graduate has the English and math knowledge and skills needed to qualify for and succeed in the postsecondary job training and or education necessary for their chosen career. Examples: Technical/Vocational Programs, Community Colleges, Apprenticeships, and/or significant on-the-job training.

What does that mean for you to be Career Ready? *There are two areas that a student must meet to be Career Ready. The first is: Career Academic A student is Career Academic by passing the ASVAB with a score of 50 or better. OR Workkeys tests with a score of 4 or above. A student must have a Silver certificate(4) to pass the Workkeys. Career Academic is when you do not pass the ACT, COMPASS or KYOTE, than a student must pass one of the following Career Academic tests in order to be career ready.

A student is Career Technical by passing the KOSSA (Kentucky Occupational Skills Standards Assessment) with a 70 on the Multiple Choice and 75 on the Scenario OR Pass a Industry Certification in Agriculture, Business, Health Science, Family and Consumer Science and Information Technology. Career Technical Career Technical side of Career Ready is the Industry side. These are tests that are created by industry to help our students achieve a career quicker than those who do not have on of these tests. The second area is:

Why do you (as an 8 th grader) need to know this? The reason you all need to know this information is because starting with the class of 2015, this is the requirement for students. A student must be College and Career Ready by the time they graduate high school. Also to help students choose a Career Pathway with CTE.
