VISION STATEMENT MISSION STATEMENT GUIDING PRINCIPLES COACH WORKSHOP

In the Ventura Unified School District all students will receive an exemplary and balanced education fostering a life-long passion for learning and engagement. We demand excellence of ourselves because our supportive community has entrusted us with their children. VISION STATEMENT COACH WORKSHOP

The Ventura Unified School District will educate all students in safe, healthy and high performing schools. We will inspire all students to excel academically, honor the unique qualities and diverse backgrounds of all students, build supportive relationships, guide all students to reach their full potential, motivate all students to successfully pursue their chosen life path, and engage all students to become responsible and contributing members of society. MISSION STATEMENT COACH WORKSHOP

Every student can learn. We will make decisions in the best interest of students. We will value and celebrate diversity, and treat all people with dignity and respect. We will operate in a fiscally responsible manner. We will work as a team. We will maintain a working environment that promotes professional growth an excellence. We will celebrate a recognize success, creativity and achievement through a variety of indicators. We will embrace families and the community as partners in education. GUIDING PRINCIPLES COACH WORKSHOP

Do your actions support our values? Young people need models, not critics. Athletes perform best when the coach cares about them, provides fairness and respect, dignity and consideration. Your behavior, what you do, creates the environment in which the team functions. Character counts and values matter…you set the standard for both. Uncontrolled emotion erodes a leaders stature, lessens respect from others and will undermine your team efforts. Most powerful four letter word to lead by is love.

QUESTION 1: May a school still receive donations from parents and guardians? Answer: YES. School districts, schools, programs, and classes can and do seek and accept donations of funds and property, and this practice is permissible as long as the donation is truly voluntary and in no way a prerequisite to participation in the program or activity…Donations cannot be made for a specific student; instead, they are made to a school or program. For example, if a person wishes to donate to their school’s cheerleading program, they can donate to the cheer program or to the cost of cheer camp but not for a specific cheerleader. FAQ’s COACH WORKSHOP

Voluntary Donation and the “Reasonable Person”: Any statement or explanation related to a donation that could lead a reasonable person to believe the donation may not be truly voluntary is to be avoided. No specific minimum amount of donation, No due date by which a donation is due, A lesser donation amount if funds are received prior to a certain date, Any statements or actions that exert explicit or implicit pressure on students or parent to make a donation, and If a family does not make a donation, that family must not be subject to inquiry as to why. DONATION GUIDELINES COACH WORKSHOP

QUESTION 2: May a school still fundraise? Answer: YES. School districts, schools, programs and classes can and do engage in fundraising activities and programs, and this practice is also permissible as long as the raising of funds is voluntary. You may require students to attend a fundraising event; however, if they are unable to raise funds for the event, you cannot prevent them from participating in an educational activity. Also, attendance at a fundraiser can be required if it is a team or club event. Penalties for non-attendance would be similar to those imposed for failure to attend any other team or club event (e.g., sitting out a game, etc.). FAQ’s COACH WORKSHOP

QUESTION 3: May a school charge fees for uniforms for team sports? Answer: NO. A school must provide a free uniform to any student who is a member of the school team in question. You can allow students to purchase their own uniforms if they want to purchase uniforms; however, buying a uniform cannot be a requirement to participate in a sport. FAQ’s COACH WORKSHOP

QUESTION 4: May a school require team members to purchase Spirit Packs? Answer: NO. Spirit packs may be sold; however, a school cannot require a student to purchase a spirit pack as a prerequisite to participate in a sport. If there are practice uniforms, etc., which are required, they must be provided free of charge to any student who is a member of the school team in question. FAQ’s COACH WORKSHOP

QUESTION 5: What if a school only charges fees to those students who can afford them; and has a waiver process for those who cannot? Answer: NO. A waiver process based on financial need or inability to pay does not make an otherwise non- permissible fee permissible. FAQ’s COACH WORKSHOP
