Student Objective To identify the 2 different forms of energy & the energy types within each form. Warm Up List at least 2 types of potential energy. List at least 2 types of kinetic energy.

Energy & Work Demo Three Students Demo 1.All three students stand in front of the class holding their arms out in front them. 2.First student stands still with two textbooks placed on top of outstretched arms. 3.Second student raises and lowers the textbooks from shoulder level to head height & back. 4.Third student holds onto the textbooks while walking around the room. Do you think each student was doing work? What is work?

energy Lets find out what energy & work are: When wind moves a leaf, or even a house, it causes a change. In this case, the change is in the position of the object. Work is done when a force moves an object through a distance. The ability to do work or cause change is called energy. So the wind has energy. When an object or organism does work on another object, some of its energy is transferred to that object. You can think of work, then, as the transfer of energy. When energy is transferred, the object upon which the work is done gains energy. Energy is measured in joules—the same units as work. WHAT IS WORK? Energy & Work Reading (worksheet) DEFINITIONS will be in PINK!

Energy & Work Work is done when a force moves an object through a distance.  Energy is the ability to do work or cause change Wind blowing leavesWind blowing down a house The position of the object has changed!

When an object or organism does work on another object, some of its energy is transferred to that object.  Work is the transfer of energy Wind loses energyLeaves gain energy ENERGY TRANSFERS

Lets find out what power is: A car does work to accelerate from rest. Some car engines do this work rapidly, while others do it more slowly. The faster an engine can do an amount of work, the more power the engine has. Power is the rate at which work is done or the amount of work done in a unit of time. When you carry an object up some stairs, you do the same amount of work whether you walk or run up the stairs. (Work is the weight of the object times the height of the stairs.) But you exert more power when you run because you are doing the work faster. WHAT IS POWER? Power Reading

Some car engines accelerate rapidly, while others do it more slowly. Which car has more POWER?  Power is the rate or speed at which work is done Which person is exerting more POWER?

Extension Activity Bowling Application Questions: What happens when a bowling ball hits a bowling pin? (talk about energy & work) How can you tell how much power is involved? View the animation below to help you. 4. The ball has energy as it moves toward the pins. The ball is doing work when it hits the pins. 5. When the ball moves fast it has more power than when it moves slow.

Conclusions: What did we discover today? Add this to your notes! Energy is Energy is found in two main forms: Each energy form has various types of energy the ability to do work Potential & Kinetic Mechanical, Chemical, Thermal, Electrical…

Conclusions: What did we discover today? Work is Power is the transfer of energy. how quickly the energy is transferred.
