The Italian flag: a brief history The Italian flag consists of three vertical bands of equal size. the colors are: green, white and red. The national anthem The national anthem verses were written in 1847 by the young poet and national patriot Goffredo Mameli and the music by Michele Novaro. The words call Italian people to fight for their freedom. The song was adopted as the official anthem in 1946 after the defeat of fascism, Nazism and the end of World War II.
