Learning Objectives: To know what an INFINITIVE is and how to use it to help you build sentences

You will be successful if you can describe what an infinitive is and combine it with at least one other verb to build a sentence!

What is an infinitive? What the VERB looks like when you find it in the French dictionary Will usually end in ER, IR, RE – useful for recognising them! Means ‘to do’ something : ‘to play’, ‘to do’, ‘to eat’, ‘to sleep’, ‘to go out’…. any other examples? Any examples in French?

Can you remember… Found in the dictionary Ends in ER, IR or RE Means in English ‘to do’ something

Are they infinitives? Je vais = I go apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? aller = to go apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? je peux = I am able apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? pouvoir = to be able apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? jouer au foot = to play football apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? Je joue au foot = I play football apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? Je fais de la natation = I go swimming apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? faire de la natation = to go swimming apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? finir = to finish apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

Are they infinitives? Je finis = I finish apply the rules – does it end in er, ir or re? does it mean ‘to….’

ALLER TRAVAILLÉ BOIRE JOUONS HABITER FAIRE VEUX NAGÉ AVOIR FAIS DANSER JOUER SUIS ACHETER REGARDÉ CHANTÉ EST FINIR FAISONS ÊTRE VOULOIR JOUE INVITER NAGER TROUVÉ ÉTAIT MANGER MANGÉ CHANTER ALLÉ

We already know loads of infinitives! faire de la natation jouer au football jouer au rugby aller à la campagne faire des randonnées faire du shopping any more????

building blocks… think of the infinitives as building blocks – let’s make them RED. faire de la natation jouer au football faire du sport

building a sentence On their own, the blocks are pretty useless. But if we combine them with MORE blocks, we can build something meaningful. One brick on its own is useless – lots of bricks together make a wall…

combining blocks… Can anybody think of anything we could combine our infinitive blocks with to make a sentence?

j’aime = I like Does it make sense? I liketo play baseball j’aimejouer au base-ball Yes! By adding another building block (j’aime) we’ve built a sentence which means something!

je n’aime pas = I don’t like Does it make sense? I don’t liketo play baseball je n’aime pasjouer au base-ball Yes! By adding another building block (je n’aime pas) we’ve built a sentence which means something!

More green building blocks… je déteste I hate j’adore je vais*** on peut je préfère I love I am going You/we are able (or can) I prefer

Fais les phrases! je déteste j’adore je vais*** on peut je préfère j’aime faire de la natation manger au fast-food faire les magasins regarder la télévision parler au téléphone visiter les musées je n’aime pasjouer au tennis écouter de la musique

Questions… Qu’est-ce que tu vas faire? Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire?

You will be successful if you can describe what an infinitive is and combine it with at least one other verb to build a sentence!
