Welcome to our French I Segment II Live Lesson! Today we will be reviewing: lessons and Lesson 07.04: Le verbe faire Lesson 07.05: Le négatif

Lesson Le verbe faire Do you know what faire means? Here are the forms of this new irregular verb! je fais nous faisons tu fais vous faites il/elle fait ils/elles font The imperative forms are: Fais! Faisons! Faites! What do you notice about the forms of this verb? How are they similar to each other and how are they similar/ different to other verbs you have learned so far in French I?

Lesson Le verbe faire In French we can use faire on its own or with specific idiomatic expressions Idiomatic means that the sentence/ expression does not literally translate into another language Here are some of these ‘faire expressions’! faire un match = to play a game faire une promenade= to take a walk faire un voyage= to take a trip faire attention= to pay attention faire de la danse= to practice dancing faire de la natation= to go swimming What is different…. **When using expressions with faire don’t forget to always conjugate the verb**

Lesson Le verbe faire Let’s Practice! We are taking a walk with our sister. _________ I am taking a trip. _____________________ Are you all paying attention? _______________ We are playing a soccer game Tuesday. ________ She is going swimming in our pool! ___________ Remember that these are faire expressions and don’t translate literally from English!

Lesson Le verbe faire How did we do?? We are taking a walk with our sister. – Nous faisons une promenade avec notre soeur. I am taking a trip. – Je fais un voyage. Are you all paying attention? – Vous faites attention? We are playing a soccer game Tuesday morning. – Nous faisons un match de foot mardi matin. She is going swimming in our pool! – Elle fait de la natation dans notre piscine! Remember that these are faire expressions and don’t translate literally from English!

Lesson Le Négatif We have talked about the negative before, but there is one more part of the negative that we need to learn: Les questions négatives et "si.“ We learned that when making an affirmative sentence negative we add ‘ne…pas’ around the verb. Ex: J’aime les devoirs. Je n’aime pas les devoirs. What does ‘si’ mean in French? Don’t forget! In negative sentences we use de or d' instead of des: Je n'ai pas de frères. Tu as des devoirs ce soir? Non, je n’ai pas de devoirs ce soir!

Lesson Le Négatif In French ‘si’ means ‘yes’ and can replace ‘oui’ in many sentences! ‘Si’ is often used to contradict or disagree with a negative question in French… this means that when using ‘si’ to mean ‘yes’ your response will most often be written in the affirmative/ positive form. Examples: Tu n'as pas de devoirs aujourd'hui? Si! J'ai des devoirs! Henri ne fait pas de bateau. Si, il fait du bateau.

Lesson Le Négatif Let’s Practice! Practice your writing skill of sentences in the negative by forming sentences. (Hint: you may not need every word for a sentence!) pas je le aime ne ski n’ n' mangez beacoup pas vous ne? pas tennis ne de n' font elles pas de ne écoutons nous rock n' Please respond to the following questions with a positive response! Tu n’aimes pas la glace? ______________________________ Tes parents n’ont pas de voiture? _____________________________

Lesson Le Négatif How did we do?? Je n’aime pas le ski. Vous ne mangez pas beaucoup? Elles ne font pas de tennis. Nous n’écoutons pas de rock. Please respond to the following questions with a positive response! Tu n’aimes pas la glace? Si, j’aime la glace! Tes parents n’ont pas de voiture? Si, mes parents ont une voiture!
