COSC Meeting – November 3

Alberta SuperNet will make affordable IP broadband connectivity available to all schools, hospitals, libraries, government buildings and municipalities throughout the province Approximately 4,700 facilities in 422 communities across Alberta will have access to the network by the early Bandwidth available for service providers at competitive rates high-speed network services to businesses and residences in connected communities. What is SuperNet?

approximately 12,000 kilometres of fibre optic and wireless components SuperNet will provide Albertans with opportunities to access services (e.g. video-conferencing) at rates comparable to those available in urban centres. What is SuperNet?

Governments and citizens are relying more on information networks for exchanging ideas and for allowing collaboration to occur, selling goods and services, and for communicating with friends and colleagues. Education and Health: –Exploring new ways to use the power of networks and technology to support learners and patients. Some drivers for SuperNet:

SuperNet Overview Base Area Network

Rural Albertans face a disadvantage in a growing Knowledge Economy as the necessary broadband network infrastructure either doesn’t exist in their areas or rural rates for accessing these services are prohibitive. Remote and rural communities

Not all urban communities have affordable access to high-speed, network services. In urban areas, SuperNet will bring the necessary infrastructure closer, and increase the opportunity for business and residents to access high-speed services. Urban Communities

Service providers, such as telecommunications, wireless or cable companies (whether existing or new) to access the network at competitive rates. High-speed Internet services at rates comparable to those available in urban centres. Alberta SuperNet will enable:

SuperNet will encourage economic growth, will lead to a better quality of life. SuperNet is envisioned as a good investment in the future of Alberta. Alberta SuperNet will enable:

Alberta SuperNet, is a unique public and private partnership between the Government of Alberta, Bell West and Axia SuperNet Ltd. How is SuperNet being built?

The network comprises two seamless areas: a Base Area and an Extended Area. –The Base Area is made up of 27 communities where competitive high-speed network services already exist. –The Extended Area includes 395 communities where the private sector has been unable to make a business case to offer high-speed connectivity. The base and extended networks

The Government of Alberta will invest a maximum of $193 million over three years to build the sustainable and scaleable network. Bell West will invest a minimum of $102 million to build the Base Area and Extended Areas. How is SuperNet funded?

PoP Point of Presence From Meet-Me Facility (MMF) Health Facility Library Government (municipal/provincial) Fibreoptics Cable ADSL Wireless With traffic originating or terminating in an Extended Area community, service providers can deliver high-speed services to homes and businesses in any SuperNet community. Service providers may also access the network and provide high-speed services in any Base Area community where no such service has previously existed.
