Habit – 3 Put first things first

Think about What one thing could you do (that you aren’t doing now) that if you did on a regular basis, would make a tremendous positive difference in your personal life? What one thing in your student life would bring similar results?

Habit 3 Being Proactive - Habit 1 reflects “I am the “programmer” Begin with the end in mind – Habit 2 reflects I write the program. Put first things first - Habit 3 reflects I execute the program

The power of independent will Ability to make decisions and choices and to act accordingly Personal empowerment comes from exercising this in everyday decisions Decisions are a function of your independent will which comes from within and provides you the ability to execute effectively in your personal or your future business life

Leadership vs. Management Leadership decides what the “first things” are Management Carries the “first things” out

Four generations of time management First Generation –Notes and Checklists –No concept of priorities or connection to values Second Generation –Calendar and appointment book –More control but still no prioritization

Four generations of time management Cont. Third Generation –Prioritization –Clarifying values –Comparing/rating the relative worth of activities –Focuses on goal setting Fourth Generation –We should manage ourselves not time –We should preserve and enhance relationships and on accomplishing results –In small groups discuss an example how managing ourselves not time maybe a good concept?

Time Management Matrix

Quadrant analysis Based on the questions asked at the beginning of the presentation what quadrant do your answers lie in? Are they important or urgent?

What it takes to say NO! Quadrant II is where we should strive for i.e.. Important but not urgent. Sometimes we have to say NO! –E.g.. Covey’s wife and good friend –Covey’s has urgent crisis passes it onto creative writer

What it takes to say NO! Cont. If you were to fault yourself in one of 3 areas which would it be? Inability to prioritize Inability or desire to organize around those priorities Lack of discipline to execute around those priorities Discuss in groups

The Quadrant II Tool Important / Urgent A Quadrant II organizer will meet six criteria: 1. Coherence suggests harmony, unity, and integrity between: –vision and mission –priorities and plans –desires and discipline. 2. Balance. Success in the various roles of our life.

The Quadrant II Tool Important / Urgent 3. Quadrant II Focus. Organize your life on a weekly basis. Schedule your priorities don't prioritize what's on your schedule. 4. A "People" Dimension. Focus on people not just the schedule. 5. Flexibility. The planning tool should be tailored to you. (You should be in control) 6. Portability. You should be able to carry your tool with you.

Becoming a Quadrant II Self- Manager Identify roles Select goals Schedule Weekly Daily Adapting See Example on page 164 and 166

Exercise In groups come up with a simple: –Schedule for the week –Use Daily adaptation weekly worksheet
