Cutting Machines Foldable Information

DRILL PRESS Related Terms  Center punch  Cutting Oil

DRILL PRESS Use  Used to drill holes into or through a piece of metal.

DRILL PRESS Safety Rules  Secure metal to the table using a clamp.  Remove key from chuck after bit is tight.  Place long end of metal on the left side of the column.  If the piece starts to spin keep the bit held down and turn the machine off.

METAL CUTTING BAND SAW Related Terms  Horizontal Cutting  Vertical Cutting  Blade Guide

METAL CUTTING BAND SAW Uses  Used to make straight or slightly curved cuts into metal.

METAL CUTTING BAND SAW Safety Rules  When using the band saw in the horizontal position make sure to securely clamp the material.  When using the band saw in the vertical position make sure the table is screwed into position.  Do not force the blade into the cut. Let the machine do the work.

METAL LATHE Related Terms  Facing  Turning  Cross Feed  Compound Feed

METAL LATHE Uses  Used to turn a cylindrical object down to a smaller diameter.  Used to face the end of a piece to make it flat.  Used to cut threads.

METAL LATHE Safety Rules  Turn the machine by hand before turning it on.  Secure the material in the chuck then remove the key.  Keep hands clear of moving parts.  Do not stand in front of the chuck when turning on the machine.

ABRASIVE SAW Related Terms  Ferrous Metal

ABRASIVE SAW Use  Used to quickly cut ferrous tubing to length.

ABRASIVE SAW Safety Rules  Stand off to the side of the blade before pulling the power switch.  Make sure the piece is tight in the clamp before cutting.  Pull the saw slowly through the metal.  Used to cut ferrous metals only.

BENCH GRINDER Related Terms  Tool Rest  Spark arrestor  Wheel dresser

BENCH GRINDER Uses  Used to sharpen tools  Used to shape metal

BENCH GRINDER Safety Rules  Keep tool rest about 1/8” away from wheel.  Check wheel for cracks before turning on the machine.  Keep spark arrestor and face shields in place.  Used to grind ferrous metal only.  Use wheel dresser as necessary to keep wheel true.

ANGLE GRINDER Related Terms  Direction of sparks  Location of power cord

ANGLE GRINDER Uses  Used to sharpen tools or shape metal.

ANGLE GRINDER Safety Rules  Never aim sparks in the direction of people or flammable materials.  Keep the disc moving on top of the metal. Never hold it in 1 spot.  Do not use the edge of the grinding wheel to grind with.

DISC SANDER Related Terms  Disc Rotation  Adhesive backed disc

DISC SANDER Uses  Used to give metal its final shape.  Removes rust or scale  Preps metal for welding.

DISC SANDER Safety Rules  Keep table about 1/8” from the disc.  Keep metal being sanded flat on the table.  Sand only on the downward rotating side of the disc.  After being shut off the disc can be slowed to a stop with a piece of scrap wood pressed against its outer edge.
