LLP HMA Pavements Inertial Profiler Prebid Meeting Solano A0104 Oakland, CA September 14, 2012 Peter Vacura Chief, Office of Asphalt Pavement Division of Maintenance

Overview Inertial Profiler in lieu of California Profilograph Inertial Profiler Specifications –Certification –Calibration –Acceptance Criteria IRI Localized Roughness Analysis Tools Incentive/Disincentive

Inertial Profiler in lieu of California Profilograph California Profilograph utilizes a center wheel Inertial Profiler utilizes an accelerometer and laser Measures at highway speed No lane closures required

Inertial Profiler Specifications Equipment and Operator certification performed by Texas Transportation Institute In accordance with AASHTO PP Local Calibration at the project –5 Runs –0.92 correlation In accordance with AASHTO PP 50-08

Inertial Profiler Specifications Index Acceptance Criteria –International Roughness Index (IRI) in lieu of Profile Index –Acceptance between 45.1 and 60 in/mi Bump Acceptance Criteria –Localized Roughness in lieu of bump must grind –IRI of 140 in/mi within a 25 foot measurement

Inertial Profiler Specifications Analysis Tools –Vendor analysis tool –Proval analysis tool Provides reports that include data required in the contract

Incentive/Disincentive Measurements based on 0.1 mile lots Incentive is paid for IRI < 45.1 in/mi Disincentive pay adjustment for IRI > 60 in/mi Correction required for IRI > 75 in/mi to within the acceptable range
