Answer the following questions! 1. Are the instruction in good order? What if the instructions were not in sequence? 2. Write the words that tell the sequence. (first) (…….) (……..) (……..) 3. Write down all the verbs. Are they action verb? 4. Write down all the commands.

Understanding a Procedural Text Read through the text quickly. Then answer the questions. What is the main purpose of the text? What features are typically found in procedural texts? What makes the instructions easy to follow? What does the first part of the text tell you? What does the second part tell?

How to Plant Bean Seeds What you need: What you do : Pot Soil Water Labels or paddle pop sticks Water proof pen What you do : Fill the pot with soil Level the soil off neatly with your hand Make three holes with your finger in the middle of the soil Place one bean seed in each hole Cover the bean seeds with soil Water the plant Write your name, date and “Green Beans” on the paddle pop stick with the waterproof pen. Now you can grow bean seeds.

Read the text again and discuss these questions! Do you think you can act out the instructions easily? Does the numbering help you follow the steps? Write down all the verbs. Does the title tell you the goal of the text? “What you need” is placed before the steps to follow “What you Do”. What if they are placed the other way around?

Procedure Checklist No What to check 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Is the goal clearly stated? Are the materials listed in their order of use, if any? Is the sequence of action or method clearly set out? Does the layout of the text help make the instruction easy to understand (steps are numbered or listed)? Is the reader referred to in a general way (i.e. pronouns you or one…or not mentioned)? Has the writer used action verbs? Are linking words to do with time (first, when, then) to connect the text? Is detail added in the form of adverbials on how (carefully, with scissors), where (from the top), when (after it has set)? Are the adjectives mainly factual (size, shape, colour, etc)
