Classroom management: Teaching Students to Engage, Enjoy, and Execute Self Control Part 2: A day at the improve… Lynn Kirby (UT Austin) Scott Fray (Northern Arizona University)

We believe students learn about the world they live in (content) through experience and reflection… But, we expect them to learn to manage their own behavior by telling them what to do… Problem???

Think, Pair, Share What is your biggest concern regarding being the teacher in a classroom? I.Think (silent activity) II.Pair up with a partner and discuss III.Share with the class

“Classroom management is the most important factor governing student learning” Harry Wong in “The First Days of School”

Today’s Assignment: Earth, Moon, Sun activities Three choices -Easiest -Medium -Most challenging

Differentiation and Universal Design Differentiation: alternatives in process and product Universal Design: designing your class to meet the needs of any student that may enter it, before they get there. –As much as possible, you anticipate future needs and potential support structures, modifications, and accommodations are built into instruction ahead of time.

Teaching with Love and Logic by Jim Fay and David Funk (my 11 word summary of a 400 page book) 1.Use enforceable limits 2.Offer choices with limits 3.Apply consequences with empathy

Practicing Enforceable Limits… Open your books to page 54. Don’t sharpen your pencil while I’m talking. Don’t bother your neighbors. Turn your assignment in on time or you’ll get a lower grade. Don’t turn in sloppy papers. I need you to be quite and pay attention so we can continue! I’ll be working from page 54 I allow people to sharpen pencils when I’m not giving directions. I welcome students to stay with us as long as other’s aren’t being bothered. I give full credit for papers turned in on time. I give credit to papers that meet the neatness standards for this room. I’ll move on when I see thumbs up from everyone!

Final Scenario: Reflection from a Student Teacher… Themes? - Student upset because of consequences for his behavior, but blames teacher. - Angry, argumentative student – Students cussing - ST convinced would have been violent if he hadn’t intervened. - Disrupted classroom environment – instruction ends - Students ‘teaming up’ against teacher - Upset parents - Non-supportive administration - Crying teacher…
