SuRF Canada: The Sustainable Remediation Forum

■May 1, 2013: ASTM publishes new standard to address sustainable aspects (environmental, economic and social) within cleanup projects. ■Best Management Practice (BMP)—for the purposes of this guide, an activity that, under most situations, improves one or more sustainable aspects (environmental, social, economic) of a cleanup at a specific site. ■For simplicity the term cleanup is used in the guide when referring to any of the cleanup phases, for example site assessment, remedy selection, remedy design and implementation, remedy optimization, operation, maintenance and monitoring, and closure. Standard Guide for Integrating Sustainable Objectives into Cleanup (E2876 − 13)

Standard Guide for Integrating Sustainable Objectives into Cleanup (E2876 − 13) Objectives of the break-out session: Get acquainted with the standard Start a discussion on how it relates to our objectives and how we could support it's use. Develop actionable items for providing guidance to our members in 2014

■Over 160 example BMPs cover 11 core elements Standard Guide for Integrating Sustainable Objectives into Cleanup (E2876 − 13)

BREAK-OUT SESSION ■Each group will have a series of core elements and associated BMPs ■Answer and discuss the following (10 min). ■For each BMP: ■How could we go about quantifying the substantial benefits over the course of the project? ■Are there any potential negative impact (in other core elements for example) or challenges to implementation ? ■General discussion: ■Are potential benefits greater than the efforts required to overcome challenges and / or control negative side effects? ■Each team presents the results of the general discussion using BMP examples to support (10 min).
