11 tips for the price of 9 Bandwidth usage disclaimers Exchange anti-spam Drive architecture and swap files SharePoint – Client integration and search CALS OWA Customizing RWW Backup failure notification SBS Monitoring cleanup

Controlling Bandwidth Usage Services such as WSUS use BITS to download data. By default, data is downloaded at maximum speed and throughout the day. Restricting the bandwidth available to BITS and the time slots during which to operate, bandwidth usage can be reduced.

Controlling Bandwidth Usage Create a SBS Bits Configuration Group Policy Edit the new policy Navigate to Computer Configuration->Policies->Administrative Templates- >Network-> Background Intelligent Transfer Service Double click Maximum network bandwidth for BITS background transfers This setting limits the network bandwidth that BITS uses for background transfers (this setting does not affect foreground transfers). You can specify a limit to use during a specific time interval and a limit to use at all other times. For example, limit the use of network bandwidth to 10 Kbps from 8AM to 5PM, and use all available unused bandwidth the rest of the time. If you enable this setting, BITS will limit its bandwidth usage to the specified values. You can specify the limit in kilobits per second (Kbps). If you specify a value less than two kilobits BITS will continue to use approximately two kilobits. To prevent BITS transfers from occurring, specify a limit of 0. If you disable or do not configure this setting, BITS uses all available unused bandwidth.

Controlling Bandwidth Usage

disclaimers disclaimers are provided by means of Transport Rules in Exchange 2007 Launch Exchange Console and navigate to Organization Hub Transport Then create a new Transport Rule

disclaimers Click a new Transport Rule for the disclaimer

disclaimers Select people outside the organization

disclaimers Select the disclaimer text option

Disclaimers Enter the disclaimer text

disclaimers Click New to create the disclaimer

Anti Spam Certain s may be rejected because of built- in default antispam SCL actions s with PDF attachments from ABSA are examples of this Launch Exchange Console Navigate to Organization Configuration Hub Transport

Anti Spam Select the SPAM tab, then double click Content Filtering

Anti Spam Select the Action tab, then uncheck the “Reject messages” check box

Drive Architectures & Swap files The more drives the better 1 x System Drive 1 x Exchange Drive 1 x Data Drive Create a dedicate partition on non system drive for pagefile to reduce fragmentation related performance issues More spindles offer best performance

SharePoint – Client Integration On new installations, Client Integration is not enabled. The result is that many options are not available including “Upload multiple files” and the ability to create Office documents directly in SharePoint using the New button. Launch SharePoint Central Administration- >Application Management->Authentication Providers->Default Zone Select Yes radio button in the Enable Client Integration section Click Save

Sharepoint – Client Integration

SharePoint – Enabling Search SharePoint 3.0 in SBS 2008 does not require SQL server for full text search But full text search must be enabled manually Download and install Office 2007 iFilter Reset IIS (iisreset) Stop SharePoint search index process (stsadm – o spsearch –action fullcrawlstop ) Restart indexing of sites (stsadm –o spsearch – action fullcrawlstart )

SBS 2008 CALS CALS are not activated in SBS 2008 There is no “Installed CALS” view as there was in SBS 2003 CALS are therefore paper based (DSP) or eOpen (VLM)

OWA file access New OWA feature Browse files in shared folders using OWA Read only functionality Launch OWA Click Documents link Only supply share UNC

OWA file access

Customizing RWW landing page You can customize the appearance of Remote Web Workplace, including adding a display name for sign-in, sign-out, and the home page. You can also choose a background image and display your company’s logo. Remote Web Workplace supports the GIF, PNG, BMP, and JPG image formats. Your custom background image or logo should be approximately 760 pixels wide by 500 pixels tall. Additionally, you can select only from image files that are stored in the \Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin\webapp\Remote\Images folder on the server. If you have custom images that you want to use, copy them to this folder first.

Customizing RWW landing page

Backup failure notification Select “Send an ”

Backup failure notification Supply details

Backup failure notification Check the “Open the Properties dialog for this task when I click finish” check box

Backup failure notification Ensure that “Run with highest privileges” is checked

SBSMonitoring Cleanup An agent is supposed to clean out records older than 90 days from the SBS Monitoring database Sometimes it doesn’t The result is a very slow SBS Console, especially when it comes to Reports, and Very long Disk Queue Lengths on the C: drive resulting in loss of performance Verify with Performance monitor, see Physical Disk Queue Length reach and maintain high levels

SBSMonitoring Cleanup Launch SQL Server Management Studio Express as Administrator Connect to \SBSMonitoring Expand Databases->SBSMonitoring- >Programmability->Stored Procedures Right click dbo.CleanupDatabase and select Execute Stored Procedure Click OK

SBS Monitoring Cleanup Click OK to start cleanup

SBS Monitoring Cleanup Cleanup may run for several hours

SBS Monitoring Cleanup Cleanup will return 0 if successful
