Our Introduction Who we are? State Waste management Centre of Gujarat working with the Department of Waste Management, India. What we do? Study the ways waste is disposed in the state Analyse the implications of waste disposal on the state resources and quality of life Suggest effective waste management strategies Launch clean – up drives How important is our task? Very important, as our decisions and strategies will impact upon your environment and help to make it a much better place

What a sight! Is this what we want? Should we just wait and watch our earth turn into a dump yard???

Waste Management Simple or complex Many people feel that solid waste management is a simple affair (simply putting waste into a vehicle and unloading it at a dump) If this were true, then why do so many towns suffer from unattended refuse blocking streets and drains,harboring flies and rats, and degrading urban environments?

We Know Solid waste management is a clear indicator of the effectiveness of Waste Management Department

Successful solid waste management is rarely achieved without thought, effort and much learning from mistakes

Risks and problems associated with solid wastes Unattended wastes often end up in drains, causing blockages which result in flooding and unsanitary conditions Flies breed in some constituents of solid wastes, and flies are very effective vectors that spread disease Mosquitoes breed in blocked/stagnant drains and in rainwater that is retained in discarded cans, tyres and other objects. Mosquitoes spread disease, including malaria and dengue Rats find shelter & food in waste dumps. Rats consume and spoil food, spread disease, damage electrical cables and other materials and inflict unpleasant bites

Plastic bags are a particular aesthetic nuisance and they cause the death of grazing animals which eat them Dangerous items (such as broken glasses, razor blades, hypodermic needles and other healthcare wastes, aerosol cans, potentially explosive containers and chemicals from industries) may pose risks of injury or poisoning, particularly to children and people who sort through the waste Waste items that are recycled without being cleaned effectively or sterilised can transmit infection to later users (Example: bottles and medical supplies etc.) Risks and problems associated with solid wastes

The open burning of waste causes air pollution; the products of combustion include dioxins which are particularly hazardous Aerosols and dusts can spread fungi and pathogens from uncollected/unattended and decomposing wastes Waste collection workers face particular occupational hazards, including strains from lifting, injuries from sharp objects and traffic (road) accidents Dumps of waste and abandoned vehicles block streets and other access ways Risks and problems associated with solid wastes

What can we do to manage waste effectively?

Our Proposal We have launched a project to clean-up the city with the help of Waste Management Experts You have been selected to work with us as Waste Management Experts. Your team will investigate how people dispose solid waste in the community and will also devise the ways people dispose solid waste in the community and form strategies for managing waste effectively Launch a clean–up drive in community and contribute to make your city clean

Your Task 1.Select a community area for the study 2.Visit the community area and conduct survey of how solid waste is currently being disposed. 3.Analyse the data and make inferences 4.Research and suggest strategies to manage waste effectively 5.Make presentation of the study 6.Create an action plan for implementing the strategies in the locality 7.Circulate a newsletter/brochure to create awareness in the locality 8.Submit the presentation, action plan and the newsletter/brochure to us by 15 th March 2006

What is Solid Waste? Solid waste is waste generated by domestic, commercial, industrial, healthcare, agricultural and mineral extraction activities and accumulates in streets and public places The words “garbage”, “trash”, “refuse” and “rubbish” are used to refer to some forms of solid waste

Some common terms Rubbish: non decomposable wastes, either combustible (such as paper, wood, and cloth) or noncombustible (such as metal, glass, and ceramics) Ashes: residues of the combustion of solid fuels Large wastes: demolition and construction debris and trees Dead animals Sewage-treatment solids: material retained on sewage-treatment screens, settled solids, and biomass sludge Industrial wastes: such materials as chemicals, paints, and sand Mining wastes: slag heaps and coal refuse piles Agricultural wastes: farm animal manure and crop residues.
