What is Lesson Study?  A model of professional development carried out by teachers in their own schools, with their own students and colleagues, in their own classrooms.  Is a group of teachers working collaboratively to plan, teach, observe and analyze lessons.  Investigates the relationship between teaching and learning. Pages 5-6

Why Do Lesson Study? Student Benefits  Design effective lessons  Notice when students aren’t learning  Adjust their teaching in appropriate ways  Clearer lesson objectives  Straightforward and purposeful lesson structures  Well-designed tasks that effectively get students to think, talk, and be active Teacher Benefits  Constantly reflecting on and adapting their practice  Interaction with colleagues  Teachers fully inhabit their roles as investigators, facilitators, and experts of student learning  Transform school faculties into true professional learning communities Page 7

Teach the Research Lesson Observe and Collect Data Compile and Analyze Data Discuss Implications Reflect on Learning Lesson Study Cycle Plan the Lesson Together Select the Teacher and Classroom Identify Data to Collect

Phase 1: Lesson Planning  Plan a research lesson  Set the lesson objective  Plan the steps of the lesson  Anticipate student responses  Determine teacher and classroom  Determine data to be collected and how  Usually takes one or more days before Phase 2

Watch Video  Phase 1: Lesson Planning Phase 1: Lesson Planning  Define Phase 1: Lesson Planning – use a Circle Map

Examples of Research Focuses  “ We would like to research how to help students become strong readers with a love of learning from text.”  “ We would like to research how to help students cultivate friendships and enjoy learning with one another.”  “ We would like to research how to build students’ number sense and ability to do simple mental computations with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.”  “ We would like to research how to help students write freely without inhibition and develop a relaxed attitude toward writing.”  “ We would like to research how to help students understand and apply the scientific method, as well as recognize and appreciate science in their daily lives.”  “ We would like to research how to help students understand and enjoy mathematics and recognize mathematics in their daily lives.”  “ We would like to cultivate both problem-seekers and problem- solvers in our students.”

Phase 2: Observation and Data Collection  Lesson is taught as planned  Team members observe students and record observations  Move into final phase

Watch Video  Phase 2: Observation and Data Collection Phase 2: Observation and Data Collection  Define Phase 2: Observation and Data Collection – Use a Circle Map

Phase 3: Data Analysis and Debrief  Compile and analyze the data collected  Discuss evidence of student learning or difficulty  Correlate student response with the instruction  Hypothesize why students might have responded as they did  Integrate what was learned into a revised lesson and/or future lesson planning  Each participants notes at least one teaching practice he she wants to continue to explore
