You can see all the workbooks on the Vicnet website: The workbooks were written by Vicnet at the State Library of Victoria. The funding came from Department of Planning and Community Development. StopPreviousNext Introduction In this workbook you will use tools on the Google website to see maps and pictures of places. You will learn how to use:  Google Maps to look at country maps and street maps  Google Earth to see a satellite view of the Earth  Google Images to search for pictures of places 6

StopPreviousNext Google Maps Google Maps can be used to search for maps of countries and maps of street addresses. Follow these steps to find Google Maps on the Google website. 1. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded in blue. 3. Type in this website address 7

StopPreviousNext 4. Press the Enter key on the Keyboard. You will see the Google web page. 8

StopPreviousNext 5. Move your mouse over Maps in the menu at the top of the Google web page. 6. Do 1 click. You will see the Google Maps web page. 9

StopPreviousNext Search for a map of a country You can search for a map of a country using Google Maps. 1. Click on Maps from the Google website. 2. The I (blinking cursor) will flash in the Search Maps box. 3. Type the country. For example type Italy. 4. You will see a list. Move your mouse over Italy. 5. Do 1 click. 10

StopPreviousNext Search for a street address You can search for a map of a street address using Google Maps. 1. Click on Maps on the Google website. 2. The I (blinking cursor) will flash in the Search Maps box. 3. Type the street address. For example type 320 Swanston Street Melbourne Victoria 12

StopPreviousNext 4. You will see a list. Move your mouse over the address. 5. Do 1 click. You will see a map for this street address. Let’s now take a closer look at this street map. 13

StopPreviousNext Looking at the map This is the map for the street address we have searched for 320 Swanston Street Melbourne Victoria. See the pin on the map? The pin shows the location of the street address that you have searched for. 14

StopPreviousNext Zoom in To get a closer look at the street you can zoom in on the map. 1. Move your mouse over the pin. 2. Do 1 click with your right mouse button. You will see a menu. 3. Move your mouse over Zoom in on the menu. 4. Do 1 click. Repeat steps 1 to 4 to zoom in and get a closer look at the street map. 15

StopPreviousNext Street view For some locations you can see a picture of a building or the landscape of a street address. This is called street view. 1. Move your mouse over the pin on the map. 2. Do 1 click. You will see a white box on the map. 16

StopPreviousNext 3. Move your mouse over Street view OR over the picture. 4. Do 1 click. You will see a picture of the street. The white box on the picture shows the street address. 17

StopPreviousNext You can close the white box on the picture to get a better look at the street. 1. Move your mouse over the X in the top right corner of the white box. 2. Do 1 click. The white box will close. You will now have a clearer look at the street. 18

StopPreviousNext Move along the street You will see grey lines with arrows on the picture. This allows you to move along the street to the right or left. 1. Move your mouse over the picture to make the grey lines appear. 2. Move your mouse over one of the arrows on the grey line. 3. Do 1 click. The picture of the street will move along the street in the direction of the arrow you have clicked on. 19

StopPreviousNext Change the street view This is the direction panel. Use the direction panel to change your view of the street. 1. Move the mouse over the direction panel. 2. Move the mouse over the arrow in the direction you want to move. For example, move your mouse over the arrow pointing to the right. 3. Do 1 click. The view of the picture of the street will turn to the right. 20

StopPreviousNext Zoom in and out These are the Zoom in and Zoom out buttons. Use these buttons to zoom in to the picture (move closer) and zoom out of the picture (move further away). Zoom in 1. Move your mouse over + 2. Do 1 click. The picture will zoom in (move closer). 21

StopPreviousNext Zoom out - 1. Move your mouse over 2. Do 1 click. The picture will zoom out (move further away). 22

StopPreviousNext Return to the street map When you are on street view you can go back to the street map. 1. Move your mouse over the white X in the top right corner of the picture of the street view. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the street map. 23

StopPreviousNext Google Earth Google Earth gives you a satellite view of the earth. Also this view gives you a real picture of the street view. You will find Google Earth on the Google Maps page. 1. Move your mouse over Satellite. The Earth box will appear. 2. Move your mouse over Earth. 3. Do 1 click. 24

StopPreviousNext You will see the Google Earth screen. 25

StopPreviousNext Search for a location using Google Earth You can search for a location anywhere around the world using Google Earth. 1. Move your mouse over the Search Maps box. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Type in the location you want to look at. For example type Eiffel Tower Paris France 4. Press the Enter key on your Keyboard. 26

StopPreviousNext The Earth on the screen will spin and stop at the location. Be careful – this may make you dizzy! The map will appear with a pin on the location. You can enlarge the map to fill the whole screen. 1. Move your mouse over the double arrows. 2.Do 1 click. The map now fills the whole screen. 27

StopPreviousNext Zoom in and zoom out using Google Earth Like Google Maps, you can use zoom in (move closer) and zoom out (move further away) with Google Earth. 1. Move your mouse over the pin 2. Do 1 click. You will see a white box appear on the Google Earth picture. 28

StopPreviousNext 3. Move your mouse over the arrow next to more. 4. Do 1 click. You will see a menu. 5. Move your mouse over Zoom here on the menu. 6. Do 1 click. You will get a closer view of the location. Repeat Steps 1 to 6 to zoom in further. 29

StopPreviousNext You can close the white box on the Google Earth picture to get a clear view. 1. Move your mouse over the X in the top right corner of the white box. 2. Do 1 click. You will now have a clear view. 30

StopPreviousNext Use the zoom buttons These are the Zoom buttons. You can also use the zoom buttons to zoom in and zoom out and the change the view of the Google Earth picture. Zoom in 1. To zoom in move your mouse over the plus sign 2. Do 1 click. Repeat these steps to zoom in further. 31

StopPreviousNext Zoom out 1. To zoom out move your mouse over the minus sign 2. Do 1 click. Repeat these steps to zoom out further. 32

StopPreviousNext Zoom using the mouse wheel Another way to zoom in and zoom out is to use the wheel on the mouse. 1. Move your mouse over the picture. Zoom out 2. Roll the wheel on the top of the mouse towards you. The picture will zoom out (move further away). 33

StopPreviousNext Zoom in 3. Roll the wheel on the top of the mouse away from you. The picture will zoom in (move closer). 34

StopPreviousNext Centre the picture You can move the picture to bring an item to the centre of the screen or to look at another part of the picture. 1. Move your mouse over the picture. 2. Click and hold down the left mouse button. 3. Move your mouse in the direction you want the picture to move. 35

StopPreviousNext Google Images You can use Google Images to search for and look at pictures on the Internet. 1. Go the Google home page. 2. Move the mouse over Images in the menu on the Google website. 3. Do 1 click. You will see the Google Images page. 36

StopPreviousNext Search for pictures 1. Move the mouse over the Search Images box. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Type the subject. For example type eiffel tower 4. Press the Enter key on your Keyboard. You will see the search results page. You will see a selection of pictures for this subject. 37

StopPreviousNext 5.To see a picture move your mouse over the picture you want to look at. You will see a larger picture. 6.Do 1 click. You will see the picture in the middle of the screen. At the right side of the screen you will see the website where this picture comes from. 38

StopPreviousNext Move your mouse over Full-size image to see a larger version of this picture. Do 1 click. You will see a larger version of this picture. 39

StopPreviousNext Return to the search results You can go back to the Search Results web page to look at a different picture or to begin a new search. 1. Move the mouse over the Back button. 2. Do 1 click. You may need to repeat clicking on the Back button until you see the Search Results web page. 40

StopPreviousNext Return to the Google Image home page 1. Move the mouse over the back button. 2. Do 1 click. Repeat this until you see the Google Images home page. 41
