The Importance of Acts 2

It would be good to remind ourselves of why the historical book of Acts and chapter 2 in particular is so important to ALL OF US

The book of Acts is super important because it is the central point of the whole MESSAGE of God

points forward to the death burial and resurrection of the Christ The OLD Testament points forward to the death burial and resurrection of the Christ The NEW Testament from Acts points backward to the death burial and resurrection of the Christ

LAW or TORAH - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Old Testament LAW or TORAH - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. These five books written by Moses are referred to as the books of Law (Torah) or The Pentateuch'. They tell the story of Creation and God's dealings with man from the beginning of time until the forming of the nation, of Israel ready to enter the land of Canaan.

Old Testament 2) HISTORY - Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1/2 Samuel 1/2 Kings, 1/2 Chronicles. Ezra. Nehemiah, Esther. These 12 books cover the History of Israel as a nation from the entering into Canaan the period of being ruled by Judges, their desire for a King, the dividing of the nation, the exile of both Israel and Judah and the return to Canaan.

3) POETRY - Job. Psalms. Proverbs. Ecclesiastes. Song of Solomon. Old Testament 3) POETRY - Job. Psalms. Proverbs. Ecclesiastes. Song of Solomon. These 5 books from Job to Song of Solomon. This is a collection of different Hebrew poetry books from widely different periods of history. The most famous poetry book being The Psalms of David.

Old Testament 4) Prophecy. 17 books from Isaiah to Malachi. Can be further divided into 5 and 12 5 MAJOR PROPHETS -Isaiah. Jeremiah. Lamentations. Ezekiel. Daniel. 12 MINOR PROPHETS-Hosea. Joel. Amos. Obadiah. Jonah. Micah. Nahum. Habakkuk. Zephaniah. Haggai. Zechariah. Malachi.

Old Testament 4) Prophecy. These prophets did their work during the period covered by the books of history. They are not in chronological order. The only order we have is that some are called:- Major Prophets 4 plus Lamentations The others are called :- Minor Prophets 12

Old Testament 4) Prophecy. The Major and Minor prophets are distinguished as such not just due to their length (because Zechariah has more chapters than Daniel) but rather because these books contain much more of the prophets own life, than the other prophets who’s books contain mainly the words spoken by the prophet.

Old Testament God has given different commandments and laws to men in different ages. He gave certain commandments to Adam and Eve in the garden, which did not apply after they left the garden. Genesis 2:16-17; He gave commandments to people who lived before the flood, communicating with them through the heads of families.

Old Testament The Old Testament records in great detail the law of Moses, which was given only to the Israelite nation Deuteronomy 5:1-3; Exodus 35: We know little of the laws God gave to other people of that period except that they were referred to as righteous or sinful showing that God had a law for them Romans 2:14-15; God's unfailing love shown throughout these ages for all righteous people.

Old Testament / New Testament Christian age till the end of time Adam to Moses The LAW to the CROSS Giving of the law on Mt Sinia The DEATH, BURIAL RESURRECTION

John often differs in the events he chooses to record and the way he records them.

Mark written to the Romans, Luke written to the Greeks. New Testament Biographical books 4 Gospels:- Matthew. Mark. Luke. John Matthew being written primarily to the Jews, Mark written to the Romans, Luke written to the Greeks. based on the already written Old Testament and the New writings by SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 The division between Old Testament / New Testament is an artificial one based on the already written Old Testament and the New writings by the followers of Jesus.

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 In reality the Old Testament does not end until the Death of Jesus and the New Testament begins effectively at the 1st day of Pentecost in Acts 2 when the gospel is preached for the first time.

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 THIS IS MADE CLEARER BY New King James Hebrews 9:16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. Living Bible Hebrews 9:16 Now, if someone dies and leaves a will--a list of things to be given away to certain people when he dies--no one gets anything until it is proved that the person who wrote the will is dead.

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 THIS IS MADE CLEARER BY New King James Hebrews 9:17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. Living Bible Hebrews 9:17 The will goes into effect only after the death of the person who wrote it. While he is still alive no one can use it to get any of those things he has promised them.

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 THIS IS MADE CLEARER BY Understanding the difference between Old Testament and New Testament Testament – Covenant- Agreement – Will. OT – Gods agreement with the Jews NT – Gods agreement with the Christians

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 THIS IS WHY Acts 2 is important OT – Gods agreement with the Jews LOOKED FORWARD to the sacrifice of Jesus and the resurrection NT – Gods agreement with the Christians LOOKS BACK UPON the sacrifice of Jesus and the resurrection

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 THIS IS WHY Acts 2 is important PETER – On PENTECOST –Acts 2 is preaching for the first time about the RISEN CHRIST

International Standard Version Hebrews 9:22 The sacrifice of Jesus and the resurrection the POWER in the shed blood to save men from sin IS NOW AVAILABLE TO ALL MANKIND International Standard Version Hebrews 9:22 says In fact, under the law almost everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of the blood there is no forgiveness.

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2 THIS IS WHY Acts 2 is important Peter is preaching that the blood of the sacrifice is NOW available to cleanse us from our sins and in Acts 2:37; in effect the people are saying what must we do to receive this cleansing blood this forgiveness of our sins

SO THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTS CHAPTER 2:38; WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND PETER’S RESPONSE TO THIS QUESTION WHAT MUST WE DO? BECAUSE IF WHAT HE SAID FOR THEM TO DO SAVED PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS THEN! THE SAME RESPONSE BY US WILL SAVE US TODAY!
