PCC RDA BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) Metadata Application Profile PCC Participants Meeting ALA Midwinter Seattle, Washington January 27, 2013

Task Group Textual Monographs Task Group Members: Christopher Cronin (University of Chicago, Chair) Rebecca Culbertson (University of California, San Diego) Robert Maxwell (Brigham Young University) Christee Pascale (North Carolina State University) Dave Reser (Library of Congress)

Background on Process Phase I – Textual Monographs – Began work on textual monographs, January 2012; submitted initial report to SCS on March 07, 2012 ( port-RDA-BSR-TextualMonos.pdf ). port-RDA-BSR-TextualMonos.pdf – Between March-May 2012, issued revised BSR based on comments from various PCC groups—Standing Committee on Standards, Policy Committee (PoCo), PCC/LC PSD RDA Policy Statements Group, Operations Committee meeting, and the PCC listserv

Background on Process Maintain the existing concept of “floor,” as defined by the AACR2 BSR. Use the LC RDA Core Elements document (December 23, 2011; as the basis for the BSR. To the extent possible, not reverse RDA instructions. Instead, submit “fast track” proposals to change RDA.

Background on Process Phase II: Integrate all other formats into a single BSR – Summer 2012: Standing Committee on Standards asked format-specific communities to identify ‘PCC Core’ elements for their domains: archival collections audio recordings cartographic materials electronic resources (if cataloged in the computer file format) graphic materials moving images notated music rare materials

Background on Process October 2012 – integrated all formats into a single BSR November 2012 – BSR reviewed and approved by PoCo with slight revisions; shared draft for community feedback through November 30 January 1, 2013 – issued the final working draft of the RDA BSR for application by BIBCO libraries: -RDA-BSR.pdf -RDA-BSR.pdf

Using the RDA BSR BSR identifies the core elements for BIBCO – it is not a substitute for training Use the BSR document in conjunction with the LC-PCC Policy Statements (LC-PCC-PSs) that are integrated into the RDA Toolkit. When describing online resources, catalogers should also consult the PCC RDA Provider-Neutral guidelines.PCC RDA Provider-Neutral guidelines When describing continuing resources, catalogers should consult the CONSER RDA core elements.CONSER RDA core elements

Organization of the BSR Organized around a baseline of RDA elements, not MARC fields ‘PCC Recommended’ elements have integrated into the whole, as opposed to being in a separate section Includes Chapter 6 elements for now For fixed field data, we split each format into separate tables to make it clearer how to code these data

Next Steps for BSR Use it! Process for further revisions: – Send suggestions and proposals for improvement to – BIBCO will forward comments to Standing Committee on Standards, as appropriate

RDA Provider-Neutral Guidelines Available at: RDA-Combined.docx RDA-Combined.docx Intended for online resources only Merges monographs with serials & integrating resources into a single document – In contrast with the BSR, this set of guidelines is arranged in MARC tag order; it does however include the relevant RDA elements in a separate column

Thank you!
