Explain how eco-tourism can protect the environment. Refer to a case study you have studied” (6 marks) “The Asa Wright Nature Centre, located in the Arima Valley in the north of Trinidad in the Caribbean, was originally a coffee and cocoa plantation. However, in 1967 the plantation became the first eco-tourism project in the West Indies. Asa Wright was carefully planned in order that the Centre’s impact on the environment was as limited as possible. The ecotourism resort recycles all rubbish, with the compost used to fertilise the kitchen gardens that supply the resort’s holiday lodges. Likewise, waste water is re-used in order to reduce the Centre’s impact on the environment. Furthermore, there are strict restrictions on the development of the resort, so much so that only 10% of the estate is actually open to visitors. This means that the wildlife in 90% of the forest remains undisturbed and is protected.

The Asa Wright Nature Centre, located in the Arima Valley in the north of Trinidad in the Caribbean, was originally a coffee and cocoa plantation. All of the staff at Asa Wright live in the Arima Valley, therefore the Centre is an important provider of employment for local people. All employees receive a fair wage and in addition to this, they receive support and advice regarding matters such as building and renovating their homes. They are even offered interest-free loans to support them in improving their lives. In addition to this, the staff at Asa Wright receive education and training resulting in the opportunities available to them increasing, and in turn improving their quality of life.
