 Alliteration: Repeating a consonant sound, usually at the beginning of the word

 Assonance: Repeating similar vowel sounds

 Consonance: Repeating vowel sounds at the ends of words

 Theme: Main idea; message; lesson

 Extended Metaphor: Comparison that does not use “like” or “as” in a stanza, paragraph, or entire collection

 Rhyme Scheme: The pattern of end rhymes in a stanza or poem  Example:  Roses are red,A  Violets are blue,B  Sugar is sweet,C  And so are you.B  The lines labeled “B” rhyme together

 Lyrical Poetry: Short musical poem that expresses thoughts and feelings

 Repetition: Words or phrases that are said again to make an idea clearer

 Rhyme: Words or lines that have an end sound that corresponds to another line
