Religion 2

 By the end of this class, the students will...  Recognize the general parts of the Mass: Liturgy of the Word.

 A good way to describe the Mass is to say that it is Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday made present today in ritual.  Jesus instituted this sacrament to “perpetuate the sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries until he should come again and in this way to entrust to his beloved Bride, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet ‘in which Christ is eaten, the heart is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us” ” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #42).

 The basic shape of the ritual of the mass can be described as a meal.  We…  Gather (the Gathering)  Tell stories (story telling)  Share a meal (meal sharing)  Are commissioned (commissioning)

 Purpose: The purpose of the gathering is to bring us together into one body— ready to listen and to break bread together.  Water: Dipping one’s hand in the water and making the sign of the cross as one enters reminds us of our Baptism.

 Genuflection: This act shows reverence and respect to the altar and the presence of Christ in the tabernacle.  The tabernacle is where the Blessed Sacrament (the consecrated bread) is kept.

 Greeting  The procession is the beginning of the Mass in which the altar cross, the candles, the Book of Gospels, and the priest walk towards the altar.  The priest then begins with the greeting “the Lord be with you.”

 Penitential Rite  The penitential rite is the moment in which we “pause and recall our common need for salvation (Richstatter).”  I confess to almighty God…  Gloria  The Gloria is a hymn of praise sung or recited.  Glory to God in the highest…

 The Liturgy of the Word is our way to tell our stories.  First Reading  Responsorial Psalm  Second Reading  Gospel Reading  Homily  Creed  Prayers of the Faithful/General Intercessions

 These readings are taken from a book called the Lectionary.  First Reading “The first reading is from the Hebrew Scriptures. We recall the origins of our covenant.”  Responsorial Psalm Psalms are “God’s inspired hymnal”  Second Reading The second reading is usually “from one of the letters of Paul.”

 Gospel Reading  Taken from the Book of Gospels  We stand to give respect and reverence to the stories of Jesus’ life since Christ is “present in his word.”

 Homily  The homily is a sermon on how the Gospel is relevant to our life today.  Creed  The profession of faith  General Intercessions  “We pray for the Church, nations, and their leaders, people in special need, and the local needs of the parish.
