I. The impressiveness of God (His enormity) – Isaiah 40. A. Our life and words are compared to Word - vs. 7,8. A. Our life and words are compared to God’s Word - vs. 7,8.

B.God’s holiness and His care - vs. 10, In v. 10 we see his strength and justice and He is “mighty and powerful demanding holiness and righteousness.” 2. But in v. 11 we see him as a shepherd, picking up the lambs and as he “tenderly cares for the weak and wounded.”

C. The size of the universe compared to God – v We are like grasshoppers. 2. This is readily understood when man is compared with the universe. D. Human beings compared to God – v. 21,22.

E. The nations of the earth compared to God - vs. 15,17,18,23. F. Summary - nothing compares to God - vs. 25,26; Is. 46:9. G. With all those facts look at how men respond to God – 19,20. H. God’s promise – vs. 30,31.

II. The awesomeness of God (His holiness) – Isaiah 6:1-7. A. God is so lofty and exalted that his honor and glory fill the temple – v. 1. B. Humble angels are around God – v. 2. C. God’s holiness is so awesome that the angels can only speak about His holiness – v. 3. D. Symbols of God’s wrath and judgment – v. 4.

E. The impact of all this on Isaiah – v. 5. F. God’s answer to Isaiah’s condition – v. 6. G. The effect of God’s cleansing on Isaiah – v “We are only prepared to receive and comprehend the grace of God when we have understood his infinite holiness and our incredible sinfulness.”

F.God’s answer to Isaiah’s condition – v. 6. G.The effect of God’s cleansing on Isaiah – v. 8. -“We are only prepared to receive and comprehend the grace of God when we have understood his infinite holiness and our incredible sinfulness.” A. God is in control of everything. B. “Nothing happens in this world by chance. Nothing! Forget about luck. There is no such thing as coincidence. Only this sovereign God who rules over all that we are and do.” C. Our responsibility – Joshua 24:15; Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Matthew 11:28. III. The sovereignty of God (His control) - Isa. 45:4-7; 44:24.

D. Since God is sovereign and in complete control of everything how can He hold us accountable for our actions? 1. Because both are taught by God in His Word. - Sovereignty does not remove our need for obedience. 2. “Willing obedience reveals a heart that is embracing sovereignty.”

3. “The higher the view we have of His sovereignty—that our times are in His hands—the greater will be the possibility to live in His victory.” 4. Our personal goal should be summed up in this statement: “I want to love God so much that I trust His every decision no matter how hard that may be.”
