The New England Colonies Physical Features By: Lily, Cori, and Emma and Emma

SOIL The soil is hard to farm because the soil is either too rocky or too sandy. Rich soil was peeled leaving a thin, rocky layer of dirt.

NATURAL RESOURCES IN THE REGION They had to build ships out of the wood they got from the forests. They also, used the Atlantic ocean for fish to eat.

BODIES OF WATER IN THE REGION The Atlantic ocean was the only body of water surrounding the region.

THE LANDFORMS IN THE REGION The New Englanders saw the Appalachian mountains that were shaped like glaciers.

About the Climate ∞ Summers in New England are pretty warm, but are too warm for growing food and plants. ∞ Winters are bitterly cold and terrible for farming.

The Growing Season ∞ The growing season in New England is from the end of Spring to early Fall. ∞ The growing season there is very short and only lasts from late May to early October which is only long enough to feed families and make a living.

Roger Williams ∞ Roger was a puritan who kept the government separate from the church because he thought everyone should worship freely. ∞ Roger was banished from the puritan village because of his religious beliefs in He then found Rhode Island. ∞ During his process he showed bravery and courage.

Anne Hutchinson ∞ Anne was a puritan who challenged the government of religion. She held meetings in her home about religion, she was banished because of this in ∞ She was brave during what she did and showed that she was trustworthy.

Thomas Hooker ∞ Thomas Hooker was a puritan who formed a new community that allowed all men to vote even if not equated to the church in ∞ He led about one hundred colonists west to the Connecticut River. There he founded the town of Hartford. ∞ Thomas showed that he was brave during this process of his.

Boys would bring in firewood, care for farm animals, Gather berries and Veggies, Help plow fields, help build and repair buildings. Girls would weave cloth for clothing, preserve food, cook, make soap and candles, help planting and harvesting. What kids would in their family

Massachusetts passed a law that said if they city hade 50 or more families they had to make a school. They worked in one room schools. They used hand-held notebooks called hornbooks. School

Most New Englanders were farmers. They worked on little plots of land growing crops such as wheat, oats, and peas. Usually farmers grew enough food to feed their families. Farming In New England

Many New Englanders chose to specialize in fishing and shipbuilding. New England’s coast had many good harbors and it’s thick forest provided wood for building ships. New England’s most common fish was cod. By 1675 they caught six million pounds of fish! Fishing

New Englanders like to play sports. Town ball was a early game of baseball. Also they played bowling, horse racing, skating and sledding. Sports

People stopped going to church due to unfair church laws. People such as John Edwards and George Whitefield. Later some churches allowed Women, African American and American Indians. The Great Awaking
