Objectives Students will: Add “er” to adjectives to compare two nouns. Add “est” to adjectives to compare more than two nouns. Use “more” and “most” with long adjectives to compare nouns. Proofread for correct adjective forms.

Rules Adjectives describe nouns. To compare two people, places, or things add “er” to the adjective.  One person: My brother is tall.  Two persons: My brother is taller than my mother.

Rules To compare three or more people, places, or things add “est” to the adjective.  One person: Sally is smart.  Two persons: Sally is smarter than you.  Three or more persons: Sally is the smartest student in class.

Rules for comparing with adjectives One syllable adjectives:  Add ‘er “ or “est” to the adjective. Bright Brighter Brightest Adjectives ending with “e.”  Drop the “e” and add “er” or “est.” Safe Safer Safest

Rules for comparing with adjectives Adjectives ending with a consonant and y.  Change the “y” to “i” and add “er” or “est” to the adjective Busy Busier Busiest One syllable adjectives that end with a single vowel and a consonant.  Double the consonant and add “er” or “est.” Flat Flatter Flattest
