ANDROID OS BY: SAM OSTROWSKI

THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE TWO Two major operating systems power all of the smartphones and tablets. They are: Android iOS The battle between these two operating systems has been raging for years. 1 2

THE BEGINNING Android was founded as a start up company in 2003 by four men. Andy Rubin was the man in charge. Little was known about Android at the time. Even the company was not exactly sure what the goal was. 3

THE PURCHASE THAT MADE IT HAPPEN Two long years after the founding of Android, the company was struggling to stay alive. in late 2005, Android was purchased by corporate giant Google 4. The purchase allowed Android to explode with funding and development. Without this purchase, Android could have failed. 5

THE JUMPSTART After the release of the iPhone in 2007, it was time for Android to step in. In return, Google formed the Open Handset Alliance with multiple large corporations 7. The Open Handset Alliance allowed these companies such as Samsung, HTC, and Motorola to incorporate their own custom software onto the device. 6

THE FIRST ANDROID DEVICE In late 2008, Google released the first Android device. The device was the HTC Dream G1 8. Features: Sold in black and white 2G/3G Network support QWERTY Keyboard TFT Touchscreen 180ppi (pixels per inch) microSD card compatible 3.15MP rear camera with video recording Android 1.0 – upgradable to 1.6 Qualcomm single core processor

THE TWO TYPES OF PLATFORMS OPEN SOURCE(ANDROID) 8 Pros: Fully Customizable Third party apps Runs like a PC User can customize anything Companies can tweak the software to their liking Cons: Prone to security threats Slower UI CLOSED SOURCE(IOS) 9 Pros: Extremely Stable No security threats Simple Cons: No customization User can only open applications No third party apps Apple controls everything

ANDROID FEATURES Open source Platform Third party applications Slow motion video recording (Released in 2010) Facial unlock(Released in 2010) Thousands of customizable widgets) Change icons to personal photos Applications that can rewrite the entire UI This is a personal screenshot of Android There are a total of six widgets on the home screen alone. All six are fully customizable in terms of size, color, and placement.

THIRD PARTY APPLICATIONS Third party applications are programs written to work within operating systems. These applications are written by individuals or companies other than the provider of the OS 10. The Google Play Store has thousands of third party applications. Hundreds of these apps can change the entire UI which is unique to Android. Anti virus software is also available in the Google Play Store. The user can turn a feature on that snaps and s a photo if the password is entered incorrectly three times.

FUTURE OF ANDROID The future is extremely promising for Android OS. The versions have come so far from Android 1.0 to Android and Android 5.0 being released later this year. Android currently makes up 81% of the market share 11. It is the basis to all smartphones and tablets. From the HTC Dream(1.0) to the Google Nexus(4.0)
