CTIA Industry Standards for Estimating Battery Life Conference call Wednesday January 9, 2013 John Bulger, AT&T

January 9 2013 agenda Introduction Approval of Notes from 11/26 conference call Update to slides to differentiate between determination of total energy required and application of GSMA TS09 test cases SME sub focus groups Discussion of required sampling rate GSMA Battery sampling update available? What is minimum sampling rate to achieve our goal? Update from latest GSMA meeting? Review /update of action items (from notes) Next steps/assignments/meeting dates Adjournment

Overview Determine total energy available from a combination of battery pack and handset Use TS09 existing tests to determine energy used by different activities Separately build user profiles to define how end users behave

Determination of total energy (Energy bucket test) Need to determine “when the terminal turns off”. Create a standard discharge profile (SDP) for all users and labs to test with. Allow terminal to fully charge the battery Need to determine how we decide when the battery is fully charged When the device says the battery is fully charged is a good starting point Or, we can define some period of time to charge the device for after the device indicates 100% charged state Battery pack should be charged in the device it is going to be tested in

Determination of total energy (Energy bucket test) Run the SDP until the terminal turns off Need to determine how we decide when the terminal turns off When the device says the battery is fully discharged is a good starting point Can we select a few devices or a few class of device(s) for the calculation (as reference for test labs/test operators)?

Determination of total energy (Energy bucket test) During the SDP, capture the energy expended by the battery by sampling voltage and current, multiplying and summing. Need to establish: Minimum sampling rate possible/necessary Minimum resolution of voltage and current Use sense resistor or current probe to capture current? Maximum allowable sense resistor / service loop resistance Voltage sensor goes on the battery side of the sense resistor / service loop

GSMA TS09 test cases In addition to performing the SDP, one would also use the GSMA TS09 test cases. The TS09 tests may be performed before, after or concurrently with the SDP. Use dummy battery fixture, power supply and terminal, measuring at 50ksamples/sec TS09 tests are performed to determine current drain of mobile due to different activities (video streaming, web browsing etc). Calculate amount of energy which is used for different activities Subtract energy due to activities from total energy available Once total energy used exceeds total energy available: Total energy available is gone “Energy bucket” is depleted Mobile powers off

SME Sub focus groups/profiles Battery life working group is not receiving enough information from handset members to define the user profiles. If we are to create accurate user profiles, these questions must be answered: How users use their devices How long they perform different activities What activities do users perform? Operators may end up defining the user profiles IF you wish to contribute, email jb147j@att.com directly

Required sampling rate Open item 3.16: We need to determine the minimum sampling rate which is required to make our measurements. There is a request for more information from GSMA regarding background on sampling rate. Marc Ouwehand (Nokia) – Why was 50k sampling rate chosen & defined per section 18.5.3 of the TS09 version 7.3? What is minimum sampling rate to achieve our goal? Update: Marc was not on the 11/26 call to provide an update.

Update from GSMA Dec 2012? Open items from battery life summaries- November 2012 Multiple action items are open which are pending updates from GSMA. GSMA group held meetings in December 2012 – is there any update regarding the discussions?

Thank you!

Expected Outcomes – Dec 31, 2012 Identify common tasks and activities performed by smart phone users Agree upon fair test methodologies which specify accurate measurement of average current drain or power consumption. Identifying and agreeing upon network settings for various air interfaces and device settings Provide technical details of how to measure battery capacity Identify and agree upon the frequency of tasks performed by users Agree upon a method to calculate time to deplete battery by users

Expected Outcomes – Dec 31, 2012 Document test procedures for executing the measurements and battery life estimates Validate test procedures by round-robin testing and by comparing test results for repeatability and accuracy Document procedures for certifying laboratories Certify test labs Specify understandable metrics to fairly compare smartphone battery life performance

Focus groups The following focus groups/areas have been proposed to guide our discussions & development: RF/network settings Device settings Marketing Battery Video Connectivity Gaming

SME areas needed RF/network settings RF signal level/environment Frequencies/channels to test Carrier Device settings Display Audio BT/WIFI/ GPS on/off –default configuration of a device

SME areas needed Marketing Feedback as to time each user performs different activities Battery Determine how to tell when a battery is fully charged Accuracy tradeoffs for any shortcuts in measurement Full run time tests Alternatives Address variation in test results

SME areas needed Gaming Video Adopt/standardize video content which is not proprietary & industry accepted/available Connectivity: Data rate connectivity for cellular & non cellular – BT, WIFI, FTP/UDP, network radio connection rate Device as a hotspot connectivity rates Data connection rates Gaming Define user gaming behavior Time
