Course Title: Laboratory Safety Course Learning Outcomes: On the completion of the course, the trainee should be able to:  -describe WHMIS regulations.  -describe Occupational Health and Safety regulations  -describe Transport of Dangerous Goods legislation  -describe the correct use of personal protective equipment.  -describe how to use fume hoods and safety shields.  -explain how to use an eyewash/shower to wash away chemicals.  -describe the use of fire fighting equipment  -identify safety methods in handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.  -describe monitoring procedures used to inspect chemicals in laboratory and storage areas.  -identify types of chemical reaction hazards & describe hazardous material assessment procedures.  -identify chemical hazards in the workplace & explain safety measures to prevent hazards.  -describe common causes of accidents in the laboratory & identify common laboratory toxicological symptoms.  -describe how to minimize accidents and safety & related incidents in the laboratory.  -describe methods of response to accidents and chemical hazards  -describe laboratory evacuation procedures used under the conditions of fire, chemical spills and toxic fumes.  -explain the purpose of documenting accidents and safety related incidents.  -describe how to write an accident/incident report. Course Title: Laboratory Preparation Techniques Course Learning Outcomes: On the completion of the course, the trainee should be able to:  -identify the purpose of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) & select the correct SOP for assigned duties  -clarify instructions as needed & follow instructions in given order  -set priorities in assigned tasks & establish timelines for tasks & organize workload to timelines, use time effectively & complete tasks on time  -prepare reagents, solutions to be used for laboratory standards & standardize bases  -prepare complete label for designated container  -perform washing and rinsing of lab ware by manual methods & perform washing and rinsing of lab ware by mechanical methods  -use hot-air ovens/commercial driers to dry clean, washed lab ware  -restock clean, dry lab ware & perform routine cleaning of a laboratory  -restock consumable items on a weekly basis & inventory, reagent, stain and chemical stock  -prepare lists of supplies to be ordered & record materials and supplies removed from stock  -record storage location of prepared material & document calculations used in the preparation of solutions, reagents and media  -record data generated in performance of assigned duties & file records and SOP cards  -communicate with team members to carry out assigned team tasks  -assist team members as needed Course Outline: Follow written and verbal instructions in the preparation of laboratory materials and performance of assigned duties; Demonstrate time-management skills in performance of assigned duties; Prepare a variety of media and solutions to be used in introductory microbiology and general laboratory n Settings; Apply principals of sterilization and decontamination in preparation and disposal of laboratory materials.; Maintain laboratory glassware and plastic ware and a clean, well-stocked workplace.; Keep accurate records of laboratory activities.; Display effective teamwork skills. Jubail Industrial College COURSE: LABORATORY MATHEMATICS & STOICHIOMETRY This training course introduces trainees with little or no background on Laboratory Mathematics. Course Title: Laboratory Mathematics Course Learning Outcomes: On the completion of the course, the trainee should be able to:  -apply the rules of significant figures when performing calculations.  -explain why rounding of answers to significant figure calculations must be done in a way which eliminates any bias.  -identify the names, the symbols and quantitative value of the SI prefixes; Convert measurements within the SI system  -know chemical reactions, equations and how to balance them  -perform % concentration calculations.  -perform molarity calculations.  -perform dilution calculations.  -perform % acid assay calculations.  -perform normality calculations.  -perform calculations involving hydrated species.  -perform concentration calculations involving less common units.  -recall acid/base terminology and calculate the pH (or pOH) of a strong acid (or base) given its concentration.  -calculate the pH (or pOH) of a weak acid (or weak base) given its concentration and ionization constant. Course Outline: Apply the rules for rounding and significant figures; Use SI system of units.; Perform chemical concentration conversions.; Perform acid/base calculations. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Average Participants’ Background: This is a general course designed for a wider audience of individuals who are or will be involved in all aspects of chemistry.
