Medical Imaging Sciences… AAS Radiologic Technician AAS Diagnostic Medical Sonography Danielle Ranger Contemp. 2 nd hour

The school of Allied Health is the starting point for both careers. After graduating from there, students go to their respective institutions Students go here for all of their Gen-Ed classes Cost: Per Year *$32,218- off campus w/o loans & grants *$19,000- Off campus w/ loans & grants

This program of study includes didactic instruction, laboratory demonstration and clinical application. Radiologic Technologists duties include using: x-ray machines ultrasound machines magnetic resonance scanners positron emission scanners Radiologic Technologists are responsible for explaining and getting patients ready for radiological tests and treatment that will be performed.

The Associates of Applied Science degree in Radiologic Technology is a five semester, 62- credit hour sequenced program. Students are admitted to the full-major once per year. Requirements: Certification of eligibility determined by American Registry of Radiologic Technologies (ARRT) Following national guidelines established by the American Society of Radiologic Technologies (ASRT) Pay: Rad. Tech $55,000/year median $71,877/year in Anchorage Advancement Opportunity: Get a bachelors, and become a Nuclear Med Tech. $70,000 Get a masters and become a Radiologic Assistant $102,000 Get a PH.D and become a Radiologic Director $130,000 Many, many opportunities!

What is it? This prepares students for employment in a healthcare setting as a sonographer. Some of the duties of a Medical sonographer are to perform abdominal, gynecological, fetal, and vascular exams Program information: The DMS program is two years long, and awards the Associates of Applied Sciences Degree. The first year of college is strictly on the UAA Campus. The second year is working full-time at clinical training sites around the state. It is very competitive, only ten students are admitted each application period. Unfortunately, there are no advancement opportunities for this program, you are kind of stuck being a Sonographer, and that’s it. Pay: $64,000 median In anchorage it’s about $58,000

Work Places.. AAS Medical Sonographer Works in : Hospitals, where most newly graduated sonographers will work. Imaging centers Private physician offices. AAS Radiologic Technologist Works in: Hospitals physician offices specialty treatment centers privately-owned imaging centers traveling companies sales research education. Both work places are always very clean and sanitary

Similarities & Differences Similarities: Work Place(hospitals, clinics) Both take pictures inside the body The number of years in college is about the same. (Including clinical hours) Differences: Pay Pre-requisites Sonographers also take videos, Radiographers do not Workplace (Sales research, education)

Which would I choose…? I would choose the path of a Radiologic Technologist. There are more advancement opportunities, and I eventually plan to become a Radiologic Assistant. This career choice is something very important to me because both of my grandfathers have passed away from cancer, and being an RA lends me the opportunity to work on chemotherapy along with other things to help people. I will be attending the University of Alaska, Anchorage in the Fall of 2013 for a degree in Radiologic Technology and a double minor in World History and Instrumental Music.
