Course Selection The Process….

The cycle begins with:  PAR meeting in November/December to initiate the process  Further meetings in January to decide on what courses to offer and  To finalize option sheet and course calendar – to go to print

February - first week  Admin run grade meetings to include Student Services  The purpose to get students thinking about the upcoming course selection process/cycle  A reminder: myblueprint.ca

Individual Pathways Planning  Students have access to the online tool “myBlueprint” to assist in getting to know themselves,  exploring their options, figuring out who they want to become and developing a plan to achieve their goals.  Activation key: Kingstoncvi

Course Selection Assemblies  Thursday, February 12 th  By Grade  Course Carousel in the gymnasium on the same day

Students to review:

Language Certificates  Core French Certificate  French Immersion Certificate  Extended French Certificate  International Languages Certificate

Core French  Need to complete:  FSF1D – grade 9  FSF2D – grade 10  FSF3U – grade 11  FSF4U – grade 12

Immersion French  FIF1D  FIF2D  FIF3U  FIF4U  + 6 courses in French ie. CGC1D3, CHC2D3, AVI103 etc.

Extended French  FEF1D4  FEF2D4  FEF3U4  FEF4U4  + 3 courses in French ie. CHC2D4, CGC1D4 etc.

International Languages  Three Spanish courses: Grade 10, 11, 12  PLUS  Three French language courses at either the Core, Immersion or Extended Level, and one has to be a Grade 12 course

Prerequisites  In choosing courses students also need to pay attention to/be aware of prerequisites for college and university programs  These can be accessed through and  Students may also make appointments in guidance to review

University requirements:  OSSD  6 Grade 12 University and/or University/College courses (M’s) to include English4U plus:  Specific requirements for specific programs

College requirements:  OSSD  English 4C  Can include Cooperative Education credits plus  Specific requirements for specific programs

A College note:  Colleges do offer Degree programs  The pre-requisites for their Degree programs are usually the same as those required at University (check it out)  Typically the average is lower  Students can also transfer from a College program into a University program

For example….for the following pathways:  University fine arts – required English 4U + 5 other grade 12 university or university/college courses in addition to a portfolio (may vary from school to school)  College fine arts – required English 4C + portfolio (may vary from school to school)

And to continue…  Social Sciences at University will require English4U + 5 other grade 12 university or university/college courses  Social Sciences at College will require English4C + Grade 11 College Mathematics

There is more…  Engineering programs at University require English4U, Grade 12 Chemistry and Physics, along with Advanced Functions and Calculus & Vectors  Engineering programs at College require English 4C + Grade 12 College Mathematics (MCT4C is often recommended)

To continue…  Science degree programs at University require English4U, Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Calculus & Vectors along with two from Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry or Physics (may vary)  Science related programs at College require English 4C + Grade 11 or 12 College Mathematics (again may vary)

Moving on…  Architecture requires English4U in addition to Grade 12 Physics, Advanced Functions and in some cases Calculus & Vectors + a Portfolio/Supplemental app(may vary)  Architectural Technologist/Technician requires English4C + Grade 11 or 12 College Mathematics

There is more…  Nursing Degree programs require English4C + Grade 11 or 12 University Mathematics (varies), Grade 12 University Biology and Chemistry  Practical Nursing Diplomas at College require English4C + Grade 11 or 12 College Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry

Who knew…  Business Degree programs at University require English4U + Grade 12 University Advanced Functions, Calculus & Vectors + three other Grade 12 U or M courses (may vary)  Business Diplomas at College require English4C and grade 11 College Mathematics

Another one…  Kinesiology programs at University require English4U, Grade 12 Advanced Functions and Calculus & Vectors, Biology, Chemistry + one other (may vary)  Fitness and Health Promotion at College requires English4C + Grade 11 College Mathematics and Biology

And last one for tonight…  For the Faculty of Arts students must have English4U + five other University or University/College courses (may vary depending on focus ie. Economics)  For the General Arts and Science Diploma at College students require English 4C + Grade 11 College Mathematics

Skilled Trades: OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship)  Apprenticeship is a hands-on training program  Apprenticeable training experience through a Co-op placement, Focus Program or a Specialist High Skills Major Program  Students receive practical experiences that may be counted towards the completion of their apprenticeship.

Cooperative Education  Is designed to match students with an employer in a field of interest  Students gain valuable hands-on work experience  Can peak their interest/or not?  Usually ½ day but may be a one period or even a full day  Grade 11 or 12

Focus Programs  Focus Programs are packages of courses  Concentrate on a particular field of interest or training  Provide students with both academic and work experience  Will give them a foundation in a career or area of study  Can lead to better choices for all post- secondary destinations

Focus…continued  Focus Program Carousel scheduled for Wednesday, February 18 th at KCVI  Time is 1:25 p.m. to 2:25 p.m.  Possibly an Evening Focus promotion at the K-Rock Centre  When? Specialist High Skills Major  Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs are career-focused programs  SHSM programs may be connected to a Focus Program or Dual Credit Program  Defined bundle of credits in Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits, including 2 cooperative education credits.  Certifications and recognized within the sector.

Dual Credit  Students can earn a college credit and a secondary school credit  Students gain exposure to college programs  Allows them to make more informed decisions regarding their post-secondary destination  Tuition, books and transportation costs paid by the School College Work Initiative.  Experience campus life  Open to Grade 11 and 12 students

On-Line Course Selection…  Computer Labs will be booked  Last week in February/First week in March  Students enter selections by grade by period  Course Selection Verification Sheets printed off and go home for discussion/changes?  To be returned to Homeform Teacher

Something you may not know…  Course selections drive the number of sections offered for each course  Therefore important to do the “homework”  Put thought into the course selection process
