Getting Students “In The Know” About Opportunities GETTING STUDENTS “IN THE KNOW” ABOUT OPTIONS Dr. William Fiege, Vice President of Academic Affairs Suzan Marshall, PEER Consortium Coordinator Victoria Muensterman, Great Expectations Coordinator JTCC PEER Educators’ Institute April 4, 2014

“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.” Kofi Annan “I wish that I had known that education is the key. That knowledge is power.” Mary J. Blige Students and their families should understand affordability options to pursue necessary postsecondary education.

Basic Truths About Improving College Affordability Graduate as soon as you can. College/university tuition, fees, room and board typically increase annually. The sooner you graduate, the sooner you get into the workforce to earn an income.

Basic Truths About Improving College Affordability Be prepared to work and succeed in college. What you don’t master in high school could cost you in college: Paying for developmental (remedial) classes Paying to repeat D’s and F’s in college classes If you need more preparation or a transition after high school, you can start at John Tyler.

Basic Truths About Improving College Affordability Try to stick to your major. Research careers and majors while you’re in high school. Go to a college that offers your preferred major(s). You often lose credit when changing majors and/or transferring. You’ll have to pay for additional classes.

Cost Saving Tip: Consider NOT completing a 4-year degree. AAS (Associate of Applied Science) – credits AAA (Associate of Applied Arts) – 65 credits Certificates – credits typically used in VA Registered Apprenticeships CSC (Career Studies Certificates) – credits The standards and content are guided by industry advisory committees.
