Hopi Indians By: Brodie, Francisco, Jacob, and Riley

Name of tribe ◊The name of this tribe is Hopi ◊Hopi stands for “peaceful people”. Also good, peaceful, or wise. ◊The name of this tribe is Hopi ◊Hopi stands for “peaceful people”. Also good, peaceful, or wise.

Territory ◊This tribe originated from northeast Arizona at the southern end of the Black Mesa.

Environment/landscape ◊Hopi villages, known as pueblos, were located in the desert in South Western America in what is today known as Arizona. The villages were located on top of mesas, which are small isolated flat- topped hills with three step sides around them.

Food ◊ Used specialized agricultural methods to grow corn. Used valleys for their naturally flooded areas. Multiple seeds in one hole. The Sunwatcher determined the time to plant. In order to take advantage of the planting season, they would plant at different times, places and elevations. Corn is still used in every ceremony in current Hopi tribal affairs. Although they allow corn to be bought from the supermarket instead of being traditionally grown. Beans and squash were also part of the indigenous crops.

Clothing ◊Depending on what they did, determined what clothing they wore. Because they lived in a warm climate they wore little clothing. They wore flowers, paint and feather headdresses. They also used clothing to show off their fighting skills.

Housing ◊Structures were built in large caves, near cliffs to form natural roofs. The sides were then built with the same masonry used for pottery. Throughout the structures there were many doors that led to surrounding buildings and together they formed a cluster that resembled urban settlements of today.

Transportation ◊The Hopi Indians walked everywhere. They did not have horses or any other animals, which they used as transportation.
