Veteran Service Organization ‘Officers Day’ December 3, 2010 Beneficiary Travel

Benefit Description If veterans meet the criteria below, they may be eligible for mileage reimbursement or special mode transportation in association with obtaining VA health services Qualify If: Have a Service-Connected (SC) rating of 30% or more; or Traveling for treatment of a SC condition; or Receive a VA pension; or Income does not exceed the maximum annual VA pension rate; or Traveling for a scheduled compensation or pension examination

Special Mode Transportation (Ambulance, Wheelchair Van) Qualify If: Medical condition requires an ambulance or specially equipped van as determined by a VA provider Meet previous eligibility requirements Travel is pre-authorized except in emergent situations

Mileage Rates General Travel $.415 (41.5 cents) per mile Scheduled appointments qualify for round-trip mileage. Unscheduled visits may be limited to return mileage (one-way) only Deductible $3.00 one-way ($6.00 round-trip) unless receiving VA pension or income does not exceed VA pension rate Monthly cap of $18.00

Mileage Mileage is paid from the veterans home to the nearest VA facility (including CBOC’s) that can provide the care to the veteran

Travel Fraud Costs Everyone Beneficiary travel fraud can take money out of the pockets of deserving veterans. Inappropriate uses of beneficiary travel benefits include: Incorrect addresses resulting in increased mileage Driving/riding together and making separate claims Taking no-cost transportation such as DAV vans and making claims
