Finding a Loophole On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.  Summarize the argument Lincoln used to justify his authority to end slavery.  Describe 3 ways in which The Emancipation Proclamation offered strategic, military benefit to the Union.

Discussion Question : Why were the Border States so important to both the North and the South? Washington D.C.

The Value of the Border States  For the North, the Border States had geographic importance.  For the South, they offered much needed economic advantages.  Additional population;  Additional railroad mileage;  Key port cities (St. Louis and Baltimore) with thriving trade and industry
